A little history: M. J. Holloway, which made Milk Duds, Slow Pokes, and Black Cows, was a Chicago company. D. L. Clark, which made Clark Bars and Zagnuts, was based in Evanston. The two companies were bought by Beatrice Foods. The two operations were bought from Beatrice by Leaf, another Illinois company that had been purchased by Finland-based Huhtamäki. All the companies were rolled together and moved to Pittsburgh. Leaf bought Heath Bars, too. Then Hershey's bought Leaf. Now, everything says Hershey's, and the names of all the orginal candy companies have vanished, as have the buildings in which the candies were produced. (My dad was General Manager for M.J. Holloway for several years, and I loved visiting the plant on Ohio, admiring rivers of chocolate, long ropes of caramel, and 50-gallon drums of peanut butter, but the spot is a parking lot now.)
Of course, moving all this stuff to Pennsylvania is why they kind of vanished from the Chicago scene.
