Seen any Zagnuts around town?

I have not seen/had a Zagnut in ages. Anyone know where to find them (Loop or Ukie Village area preferred)? Seems downright silly to order a box on eBay.

While I have your attention, anyone know where to find Kinder Bueno candy bars?

I love Kinder Bueno bars! I don't really seek them out b/c I know that my local Joe Caputo's carry them. Be sure to check the "best by" date on them.

A bunch of the Kinder products (including the Kinder Surprise Eggs, my kids' favorite) are available at Essence of Europe grocery in Arlington Heights.

I've also seen them at the Shop n Save at Golf Mill in Niles.

No Zagnut sightings... yet.

I do not think that they make the Zagnut Bars anymore. They were produced by the Clark Co. of Pittsburgh which has since been shuttered with the assets sold to NECCO.

When I lived in Cleveland, I found this place that sells all kidnds of candy. Over the years, this guy has found me all sorts of odd candies. I would give him a call to see if Zagnuts are still being made.

Cracker Barrel restaurants have all sorts of retro candy. If there's one near you, you may want to check them out.

('Course, there aren't any Cracker Barrels anywhere near the city.)

The kinder stuff (including bueno bars) are available at Andy's Fruit Ranch and Cermak Produce on Kedzie.

Sorry to dig up this thread, but I found some Zagnut bars in a store--

Lively Liquors on Higgins Road in Elk Grove Village has them on the candy shelf. Zagnuts are now a Hershey product.

Evil Ronnie and I were out in the 'burbs at Lincolnwood Produce last week and they carry zagnut bars, having purchased some in my excitement.

Lincolnwood Produce is at Lincoln and Touhy in Skokie. (thanks to Steve Z for turning us onto this place) It is both ethnic and eclectic...

I drive by that place all the time (funky sign, as I recall), but have never stopped in. Now, I have a reason to do so -- not so much for the Zagnuts as for other arcane candies they may have in stock.

So, I stop into the corner store in my neighborhood last night for some beer and sitting next to the register is a Kinder Bueno display!!!
I grabbed 2 packs (each pack has two small bars, kinda like Twix) for $.99 each and headed home.

These really are quite possibly the best candybar in the world. It is almost like a chocolate covered Nutter Butter (the wafer ones, not the peanut shaped ones) filled with hazelnut cream. I hadn't had one of these since I was in Paris in 1998 where I would grab one from a vending machine in the Metro station before boarding a train to get the the venue where I was seeing the band Widespread Panic for 10 nights Ah, the memories...

Anyways, the corner-store that has them is Nevada on Chicago Ave and Rockwell.

Kinder candy seems to be making a push around here lately. I'm not sure if it's nationally or targeted to the Chicago area, but I'm seeing Kinder stuff more and more.

A little history: M. J. Holloway, which made Milk Duds, Slow Pokes, and Black Cows, was a Chicago company. D. L. Clark, which made Clark Bars and Zagnuts, was based in Evanston. The two companies were bought by Beatrice Foods. The two operations were bought from Beatrice by Leaf, another Illinois company that had been purchased by Finland-based Huhtamäki. I remember driving north out of Boston on the way to Maine and passing a huge factory/warehouse with NECCO boldly emblazoned on its roof. Even though I loathe Necco Wafers, it was still pretty cool to see.

Zagnut bars can be found at the two Lickity Split (https://www.lickitysplitchicago.com) locations: 6056 Broadway & 7000 N. Western.

Along with their very good custard, LS offers hard-to-find soft drinks and candies (Bit-O-Honey and Mary Janes, oh my!) and some bakery sweets.

Have you tried Eleven City Diner for the Zagnuts?

I suggest Fresh Farms Niles (Touhy) for the Kinders. I'm 99% positive I saw them there last week.

Another fallout of NECCO's woes: Sweethearts candy will go missing.

I will admit I never really liked them, though they were always amusing to read.

This got me looking around -- because my dad spent a lot of years in the candy business, including a lot of companies that no longer exist -- but making candies iconic enough to be picked up. For example, Milk Duds, Slo Pokes, Clark Bars -- and Zagnuts.

So I did a search, and Zagnuts are available online-- oddly enough, from Office Depot (though also from Amazon). But fun trip down memory lane, reading some of the above posts.

I wish U-NO Mint bars were still made. Also, the 3 Musketeers Mint with Dark Chocolate Candy Bars.

I'll wait and see how the Necco wafers turn out. When Ding Dongs came back they didn't taste anything like the Hostess original ones. Cake was wrong, filling was wrong, icing was wrong, and they were smaller. Ugh.
