The store is open! I stopped by on my way home after a short day at work. The place was packed, both with customers and employees still placing stock on shelves. Impressive produce section. Not many aisle signs in place yet so finding things can be a challenge. Large meat section with items I usually don't see at the Jewel (i.e. chicken feet, tripe). Found fresh masa near the deli section. Huge selection of cheeses. Defiantly going to go back and explore the place more once the opening day hoopla has died down.

We've been getting its flyer in our Red-something-or-another packets for the last four weeks. Nothing exemplary as far as pricing goes.
Meanwhile, Strock & Van Till continues to believe that we don't exist, even though it has a store @ Elston & Logan Blvd., quite within the range other Red-something grocers are sending us their weekly ads.

Actually, the feeling is mutual. What I mean is, the other day we were driving by Strack and Van Til and I commented, "Oh my God, I can't believe they're still there! I haven't thought about them in years!" So, if I'm typical, it's not only the case the Strack and Van Til believes we don't exist.

I attribute this to all the excitement over new Mariano's locations, and the news about Mariano's and Whole Foods expanding into closed Dominick's locations. No one (it seems) remembers S & VT is still around.

In line with this, attempting to visit their website this morning results in "Safari can't open the page 'www.strackandvantil.com' because the server unexpectedly dropped the connection." Hopefully that's a temporary condition.

To each their own I guess--but Strack is my go-to for staples and non WF stuff. Their produce is very respectable, prices are good and service is fine. And the fact that they dont waste paper on circulars that no one reads, in newspapers that no one buys is a bonus in my book. If I had a Pete's closer to home that might compete but in competition with Jewel, which is ridiculously over-priced with pathetic produce and crap service, there's no contest.

Glad to hear this. It makes me think we might go there again. The corollary of the thought I expressed above--the very next thing I thought--was, "How come we don't even think about this place anymore, let alone go there? We kind of liked it."

Somehow, it seems, S & V T has established itself as a go-to place for people right in the neighborhood, or who pass by it daily so it's never out-of-sight-out-of-mind, but has never succeeded in creating buzz that can make it a destination for people beyond the neighborhood--as, for instance, Mariano's has.

I think S&VT is ok but the hassle of getting in and out means I only visit when heading to the area for a Microcenter trip or something.

Between the evil Damen/Elston/Fullerton intersection (soon to be under construction) and the construction on Western just North of Fullerton, getting to Strack has become quite the ordeal. I am closer and can more easily walk to Mariano's, and it's an easier drive as well, though getting out of the parking lot onto Webster can be a trial on occasion.

I made my first visit to the new Cermak Fresh Market yesterday. There are quite a few things to like about the new store. It carries our local ethnics' ingredients, including Russian/Russian Jewish, Polish, West Indian, Indo-Pak, and most especially Hispanic. The latter is not just Mexican, but also South American. The meat selection was very heavy on the pork, with every possible cut, it seemed to me. There is also a lot of poultry, not just Perdue, but also organic, kosher, and halal selections. For anyone interested, there was plenty of bull pizzle available, perhaps filling a need in the neighborhood I was unaware of. The produce didn't blow me away--you can do better on Devon--and there were no organic choices that I could see. If you need cleanser or plastic bags, you can get them there too. All in all, I'm glad to have the store open and close by, but it will not replace Fresh Farms Niles for me.

Safeway has killed off still another local chain (by acquiring it):

Bucks Local News reports that the last remaining Genuardi's store, in Audubon, Pennsylvania, will close soon, eliminating the last vestiges of a two-dozen store regional chain that was the Wegmans of its time, with a strong fresh foods offering and high customer service levels.

This is pretty good news, because this small chain is very responsive to any area they serve. It will be interesting to see how it stocks for this location.

One has to wonder about the accuracy of this article. There is indeed a "Shop 'n Save" chain based out of St. Louis. They even have a few locations in downstate Illinois. However, they aren't associated with the "Shop & Save" markets found in the Chicago area. Adding to the confusion, before realizing the mistake and editing the article, the writer lists the owners as "Pick 'n Save", which is the lower end Wisconsin based grocer owned by Roundy's, who also own Mariano's. Confusing enough?

I'll wait until the sign goes up on the front of the building to find out who owns the place. Although I'll likely never be in that area, at least not to grocery shop, so it won't matter anyway.

I read South Shore "neighborhood groups" do not want both "n" and "&". They want eminent domain by the city, so this store will be leased to the owner they like. Too late, but alderwoman still wants eminent domain after the lease signed!

I wonder how many old Dominick's stores are still vacant. I did read why one of the reasons why some are still vacant is that Albertson's (Jewel's parent company) bought out the leases of some of the vacant stores and won't sublet to other grocery stores in order to have less competition.

The Morton Grove store is still vacant. Meijers was going to move in there, but backed out. I am not sure if the Lincolnwood store is occupied. I think Cermak Fresh Market was going to take over the store, but decided not to.

But, the reason I reply is, if you read the above text, back in 2015, the complaint was we weren't getting the ads from grocery stores which should have been appealing to us | me.
In 2019, with my dad having bit the dust, the complaint is amended to that I am not getting the Red-something-or-another [which itself is now amended to Retail-Me-Not] dropped on the stoop here at the abode (on **** - you can ask - and I'll reply that the abode adjacent to me on the east gets it), and it seems that I cannot opt-IN to the ad servers. Yes - maybe because I do not subscribe to the Chicago Tri**** (and I never shall), it has decided I do not get the weekly Wednesday advertisement section. -It seemingly has no problem with leaving copies of "Hoy", its Spanish-language publication-, which is where I scrounged those coupons for Cheez-Its.
I've tried calling the phone number to opt-OUT of getting the sale flyers.
But I want to opt-IN. Seemingly, this has not worked. I still view the Wednesday flyers on the house adjacent to ours.
Can any of you come up with a telephone number I can call to get ON the list of the Chicago addresses getting the Wednesday flyers?

I live in a condo building in Evanston and we get multiple copies of the sale flyers. They come on either Tuesday or Wednesday. 90% of them do not get taken, and get recycled. Have you tried calling the 1-800-874-2863 phone number that is listed on the retailmenot for service inquiries . you can also go to the RMN,com/Everyday site to see if you can print coupons off their website. I have found out that since I have signed up for mymixx and Mariano's rewards account, I don't have to clip many coupons anymore, although I know you refuse to sign up for them because you don't want big brother snooping on you. You can also go to coupons.com and print coupons off their site too.

You can also go to the websites of the individual stores to find their ads too. Over at mashupmom which is a Facebook group that I belong to Rachael does the Jewel deals every week, and tells you where to find the matching coupons. She also gives links to lots of coupons. Hope this helps, Nancy

For years I've tried to figure out the algorithm that is used,but to no avail,as to what units in our building receive the flyer. My experience is the same as Nancy where as there are always some that are not taken and end up in the garbage.

I believe Valassis is the actual company that owns Red Plum/RetailMeNot flyers. Maybe you'll have some luck contacting their local sales offices. There are
3 local locations. Local Valassis sales office

If you ever do get a definitive answer I'd love to hear it.

Per this link, you can submit a request online. I did this before, and it took several weeks, but eventually they did stop. And it does seem that Red Plum and RetailMeNot are the same company.
