Flourish Bakery has a great coconut cake. They offer it by the slice if you want to try some in shop.

Lou Mitchell's has one of the greatest. You can call the restaurant and order a whole cake from their bakery

Good call on the Lou Mitchell's coconut cake. I had forgotten how good it is.

It' might be a little out of the way (and it isn't a bakery), I haven't been there in quite a while, but maybe Edna's restaurant would sell you a whole cake. It was FANTASTIC when I tired it.

If the northern suburbs are convenient for you, Three Tarts Bakery in Northfield, right off the Willow Road exit from the Edens, does an excellent coconut cake, available by the slice or whole.

Another great coconut cake is Papa Lena's, although their limoncello cake is even better. The cakes are available frozen at a variety of local stores, as well at the Papa Lena's storefront.

Depends on how much you're willing to spend. The Peninsula Grill in Charleston has a legendary cake (reputation is well deserved) and will ship. But it's pricey. My wife surprised me with one for a birthday a few years ago. It was very expensive then and i"m sure it's more now. But it's memorable.

Thought I'd bump this thread. I'm looking for a cake for a co-worker's birthday. I know he likes coconut, but I'm unsure of anything else. Cupcakes would also be nice. Or a cake with alternating layers that includes coconut in there somewhere. Who's got some good ones? Preferably near Irving & Kimball or 33rd & State.

I can heartily recommend (along with a few other folks who post here) Lindsay Shepherd, formerly a pastry chef at Bristol working for Amanda Rockman, currently owner of Sugarloaf Bakery, who prepares custom cakes, pies, tarts, etc. for private clients. She is awesomely talented and, I think, very reasonably priced. The last few times I've ordered from her, I just gave her very basic preferences and she created something incredibly delicious. She is located at Damen and Wilson so not sure the location would work for you but worth a call. Here is a pic of the vanilla bean flecked cake with fresh blueberries, ginger syrup between the layers and ginger buttercream icing that she came up with for a friend's birthday earlier this week. The cake fed 15+ (!!!!) people for $45. All I told her was that the birthday girl wanted something on the lighter side, with summer fruit and she doesn't love citrus.

Wow, that sounds and looks great and I don't even like blueberries.

    Hi,

Coconut cake is a Southern style cake. I would venture to guess bakeries who have Atomic cake will likely have Coconut cake.
