There was a place on the north side, I want to say near Iriving Park west of the Kennedy. It was like a pub style restaurant and had THE MOST AMAZING sweet cornbread. It was almost like cake. Kernels in it, maybe served in a skillet? Place maybe had pickles on the table?

It’s driving me crazy, aside from wanting to make that cornbread, where this place was and whether it’s still around.

    Thanks!

The pickles and custard-filled cornbread sounds like Jared Leonard's now-closed BBQ Supply Co. in Rogers Park. The cornbread recipe was from the Marion Cunningham editions of the Fannie Farmer cookbook (Google custard-filled cornbread, the recipe is reposted in lots of locations). Leonard relocated the BBQ concept to Denver but he now has The Budlong hot chicken restaurants in Chicago.

He also is opening Hamburger Stan's here as well.

sujormik - Was the restaurant you had the cornbread at a BBQ place? BBQ Supply Co was on Western Ave. It was called RUB's Backcountry Smokehouse back in 2010 when it opened.

Here's a link to the recipe. I think the only modification is adding some fresh/frozen corn kernels.

It was definitely not a barbecue place. Dark lighting, booths, burgers.

And it was closer to 25-30 years ago, not 10.

The Red Star Inn? But it was just west of the Kennedy.

Well, north of the city, though not north in the city--the Lucky Platter in Evanston has the best cornbread I've ever eaten. Only place I would truly say I'm eager for cornbread.

My mistake, this place was west, I’m changing in the original post. Will look up Red Star Inn, though it doesn’t sound familiar.
