Moetchandon’s hairdresser apparently dines out quite a bit. And lately she’s been highly recommending the Vietnamese fare at Lincolnwood's Hoanh Long.

    As have others.
Yelp wrote:This is the best Vietnamese Restaurant in the city hands down. It is affordable, clean, and food to die for. Everything we have tried here is so good and it's even a BYOB which makes it even better. Try this place you won't regret it.

I’d say I take Yelp’s comments with a grain of salt, but that would give too much weight to a grain of salt.

But wait, there’s more! The erudite, honorable, cultivated, and sophisticated posters, and even the hoi polloi, from LTH have lauded Hoanh Long.

However, those comments haven’t been updated in some time. So, the Evanston Lunch Group™ will correct that. On Wednesday, March 13. At 12:30 pm

As usual, all are welcome. See you there!

Hoanh Long Vietnamese & Chinese Restaurant
    6150 N Lincoln Ave

    Chicago, IL 60659
    (773) 583-7770

(And, thanks for the other suggestions; I’ll use then to start a list of future possibilities.)

Wow, just read the previous thread. I will have to go through it more carefully and make a list of items for a private take-home if they aren't included in the LTH lunch meal. Unless I weaken and just head over before then (probably not, as they are closed on Mondays, when I drive past almost every week).

I'm planning on attending, and my +1 is a maybe.

I'm not going to be much help at selecting dishes there. My recent experience with Vietnamese food consists of pho (which is not easily divisible for group sharing) and banh mi (which HL doesn't have). But I'm open to trying whatever we order, especially any other dishes considered standouts of Vietnamese cuisine.

    I am in.

The menu on their web site has quite a range of non-soup dishes, virtually all unfamiliar to me. The easy way to read the menu is to open each page in a separate tab and then click the magnify icon. Menu on home page by itself is essentially unreadable.

We probably won't need it, but there's a reservation under "Tom."

Here's what we had (using the names, descriptions, and categories shown on the menu):

Goi cuon - Shrimp spring rolls (Appetizers)
    Image
Banh tom - Shrimp cake with sweet potato salad (Appetizers)
    Image
Banh xeo - Vietnamese crepe w/ shrimp, pork & salad (Appetizers)
    Image
Goi ga - Chicken salad (Appetizers)
    Image
Banh cuon thit bo - Rice cake rolls serve (sic) w/ Vietnamese beef (Appetizers)
    Image
Mango and Taro - Fresh fruit smoothies with tapioca (Smoothies)
    Image
    Image
Cochinchin noodle - with shrimp & chicken (Fried Rice Noodle)
    Image
Bun bi cha gio - Steamed rice noodle w/ shreded (sic) pork skin & eggroll (Steamed rice noodle)
    Image
Pho dac biet Hoanh Long - Hoanh Long special beef noodle soup (Beef noodle soup - Pho)
    Image
Lau Boulda-Base - Seafood with mixed vegetables in hot pot (Hot pot) (Note - I apologize for not taking this photo when the dish was first served (or when it first started boiling), when it was prettier with the mussels sticking out along the edges.)
    Image

I liked pretty much everything we had. My favorites were the goi ga for the spice level (it was our only spicy dish), the cochinchin noodle for its slightly chewy texture reminiscent of the Thai dish pad see ew, the hot pot for its amount of fish, and the taro smoothie because I love taro.

The meal was also quite a bargain; we ordered way more food than we needed to (I think the food quantity would have been just as fine without the $25 hot pot), yet, including two more beverages not pictured, the check was $111 before tax/tip, or $21-26 each. A real bargain.

It was a very successful meal, and Hoanh Long is a restaurant to which I am planning to return. The Pho was wonderful as was the shrimp cake and the beef rice cake and the cochinchin noodles. We ordered using the GWiv rule: Stomachs expand for the food available. I rank Hoanh Long as among the best Vietnamese restaurants in the city.
