P.S. In a grocery store parking lot today, I saw about six people in lawn chairs who were socially distanced and having a conversation. It gave me hope.

The gold standard N95 masks? 95 means it screens out 95% of particles. Homemade cloth masks are more like 40-70%.
Both people wearing cloth masks, that's 9-36% still getting through.

I had to see my dentist at the Carlson building across from the Evanston library. I was originally supposed to see her on 4/2, but it got delayed twice. I went to Whole Foods down the street after wards, and there were more customers there than I thought there would be, and they were out of some of the stuff I wanted. They only had WF AP flour and organic flour, and they were out of yeast. They did have California garlic though. The sign said it was $4.99 a pound, and it was from California, but I assume it was conventional. I did not see any organic garlic there, but when I went to check out the guy rang it up as organic, which is only $3.99 a pound, and I got two large heads of garlic for $1.08. This hopefully should last me until I can get some garlic at the farmer's market in a few months.

I was just at the Wilmette Jewel on Green Bay, and all of Jewel's stores are now open 6:00am-midnight. The cashier told me that business has increased, and they decided they needed to be open more hours. Now I am going to go shopping at Jewel in the evening. It seems like the grocery stores in general have been busier lately. Maybe it is because people ran out of all of the stuff they bought in March when they did all the hoarding. I was in Whole Foods in downtown Evanston yesterday too, and it seemed like they were more crowded.

One thing I have noticed is that the Chicago Avenue Jewel in Evanston keeps track of how many people enter the store so they can limit the number of people in the store, and the Wilmette store does not. When I was leaving the Chicago Ave. store last week at 8:00 pm, they had a line of people waiting to get into the store.

Maybe not as many people are using delivery or doing curbside pick up too.

I live a couple blocks away and shoot over around 6.30pm often on weeknights. It's never been crowded or a hassle throughout this. Weekend afternoons is when they're swamped. It's a really good store for alcohol. Lower taxes than Evanston with no reduction in selection. I just don't buy their meat, fish or poultry because Fresh Farms has them so thoroughly beat on that.

I've noticed that the Wilmette store sells a lot more alcohol than the Chicago Ave. store. I am not a beer lover, and I don't buy a lot of wine. The only meat I buy at Jewel is salmon burgers and chicken sausage when they are on sale. They had Amylu sausage B1G1F last month. I love their chicken sausage. I would have bought more but it all had a short expiration date. I don't do factory farmed meat, and I don't eat much red meat, and so I buy my chicken at whole foods when I do buy it, which is not very often. I still have some frozen gulf shrimp I bought at Aldi's before the pandemic that I need to use up.

We go to Heinen's in Glenview roughly once a week, usually early afternoon on weekdays. There are markings outside for six-foot intervals for people lined up waiting to enter the store, but at the times we go, we've never seen anyone waiting. Someone at the entrance checks for the required masks. Their aisles are fairly wide; the only ones where one-way markings seem to matter are the last two freezer aisles, at the end of which there is hand sanitizer and you wait for someone to direct you to one of the cashiers. Same at New City Mariano's, all first floor windows are boarded up. Only way to enter is through the second floor doors or the first floor doors located inside the parking garage. Parkig garage was free as of Thursday. Jewel on Division and Sedgwick was boarded up as well. Good selection of flours (including KA AP and bread) but canned tomato selection was lacking.

Hi- Concerning Walmart, their Skokie store and both of their Niles stores are temporarily open only 9:00-5:00, and most of their Chicago stores are currently closed. They are worried about looting. This is even though their website says that both their Skokie and Niles stores are open until 8:30. I even got an email today about a pickup that I ordered on line yesterday, and they emailed me at 11:30 this morning telling me that I could pick up my potting soil, and they were open for pickup from 8:00-8:00. I called up the store, and found out that they are still only open from 9:00-5:00, and yes there is a line to get into the store. I am not a big Walmart lover.

My better half was in Mariano's on Broadway this afternoon, and saw a customer, an older gent, not wearing a mask. (She described him as Farmer Brown because of his bib overalls.) I don't think every customer should necessarily know that masks are required, or be wrestled to the ground for not wearing one. I do think store management ought not to let customers without masks gain admittance, and ought not to stand idly by as unmasked customers roam around the store. Management at this Mariano's is falling down on the job.

A Shop and Save store branded as Local Market located at 71st and Jeffery was damaged last week. I have heard some of the neighbors came to the defense of this six-month old store. At the boarded up Shop and Save near Midway, they indicated at a minimum there was window damage at Local Market.

Jewel on the southside was hit, then Jewel donated a million dollars to a fund to help looted and damaged businesses.

Mayor Lightfoot has been asking stores like Walmart to stay in Chicago according to local news.

Somehow there is this belief insurance will cover all this mayhem and shops will return.

Hi,

Woodman's in Buffalo Grove has finally taken down the roped lines feeding people into self-serve or cashier-served lines. The signage is still on the floor, so it could easily be re-established.

Store hours are still 7 am to 10 pm.

There is a lot more traffic on the roads. The days of clear sailing are behind us.

This Shop & Save is no longer boarded up. The liquor store next to Superdawg is, though. So is the animal hospital on the same strip as Red Apple, just north.

The problem with supermarkets these days is that the majority of them are run by managers, not merchant. A manager walks around the store making sure that all of the company's planograms are fulfilled to ensure that they capture all of the slotting fees that they are entitled to. A merchant notes that snow is in the forecast and has the staff bringing up the snow shovels, rock salt, and washer fluid up at the front of the store to ensure that customers make those impulse customers. The merchant thinks like a customer and gets more sales.

Supermarkets purchased by private equity generally don't do well because the investment group is usually more focused on the 50,000 foot view. Customers are more interested in the close up views.

I live near a Fry's (Krogers) store in an area that is 60% Hispanic and 20% Native American. They do not make a single tortilla but their bakery makes pretzels. Their prep food counters offer no Mexican entrees but carry all the same selections as their Cincinnati test stores. And their prep food sales is negligible (other than fried chicken).
