How a Berks County woman used Facebook to rescue an egg farmer’s 80,000 hens amid the coronavirus
Hamburg egg farmer Josh Zimmerman faced disaster about a month ago when his bulk-egg processor ran out of storage for liquefied eggs for cruise ships, hospitals, hotels, and school cafeterias. The yellow goo from millions of eggs, stored in bladder bags, had filled all the available freezer space. So processors had to shut off the flow.

With a veritable Ol’ Man River of eggs, 60,000 a day rolling out of his hen houses, Zimmerman, 37, faced a hard choice: either euthanize his 80,000-hen flock or find a new market for eggs.

Into that void stepped go-getter Timi Bauscher, 38, who runs the Nesting Box Farm Market and Creamery in Kempton, about 20 minutes from Zimmerman’s cage-free spread, both in Berks County. She proposed to sell some of Zimmerman’s eggs at her roadside market, offering a minimum of five dozen on flats for a discounted $2 a dozen.
    ...

    This is just terrific!

I learned in Iowa there are groups rescuing egg-laying chickens.

Now all they have to do is figure out what to do with the other 59,000 eggs a day.

It reduce the pressure to euthanize half his flock.

Chicken egg size is related to the chicken's age. It would take a while to regenerate what he had.

I wonder what those thrifty people did with all those eggs? Distribute to family, friends and neighbors?

I hadnt read the actual article before just what you copied. I am stunned how many they are selling. Very impressive. I figured they would be lucky to sell a couple hundred dozen at a roadside stand. 20,000+ dozen a week is crazy.

At Woodman's today: no medium sized eggs. I was planning to made stuffed eggs with those eggs.

Prices on eggs at this store are back to acceptable range.

Jewel has eggs for $.29 a dozen on J4U. There is a limit of one dozen. I am still working on the brown eggs I got at the farmer's market four weeks ago. I still have two left. I am not a really big egg lover.

They had the same deal at most Safeway back in February, limit 2. Of course, it came the week after I purchased 2 dozen @ 0.89 each. We had a lot of eggs for a while.

Why sell eggs for 29 cents a dozen and then limit customers to one dozen? Are you trying to get rid of them or not?

I get the loss leader but not the one dozen limit. How many people are they afraid would buy more than, say, three dozen eggs at a time?

I've been to Jerry's, Milwaukee/Oakton, once in the last few years, not my cup of tea, and this is before c one nine. Jerry's had an egg special running that day, something ridiculously low, like six-dozen for $2. People, many people, were groaning out of Jerry's with ten, twenty and more cartons of a dozen eggs.

    Jerry's was a madhouse.

I would buy 20 dozen on the spot and give them to my older neighbors. Even the "non-cookers" all can cook eggs.

When I see a deal out there, I always text my MOABO (Mother of all buying opportunity) friends and see if they want in on the deal. They usually text me back in 10-15.

Too bad we are not neighbors, because I would want in on your club.

I could get whipped up in the competitive spirit to find even more deals!

I do ok on my own with a few friends pointing me to leads, but there could be a delicious synergy.

One other thing that we were doing was to work some of the Fry's (Krogers) 3-day deals. For example, when they offer butter at $0.99/lb limit 5, I would buy all 5 so that my good friend could buy her five and take three off my hands. Or when they are offering the Kroger Keurig style pods, I will buy five for her.

Under normal circumstances, I tend to find more deals as I hit different Fry's stores with very different pricing philosophies.
