Hi- I went to the Jewel on Chicago Ave. about 7:00 this evening. I should have gone a different time. There were too many people there, and I had a little problem with social distancing. They were out of toilet paper again today, but they had plenty of bread. They also had some flour, but no bread flour and no King Arthur. They had strawberries for $.99, but they were really green, and so I passed on them. They had Maxwell House coffee on sale, but it was $5.99 or $4.99 if you bought two. They had some breakstone whipped butter, sour cream, and cottage cheese 75% off. I got a package of whipped butter for $.87.

While I was at the self checkout, this customer walked up to one of the other self checkouts. He had a service animal/support dog with him. I thought you could not bring support dogs into the store? While this guy was checking out his dog was licking the front of the self checkout. The person in charge of the self checkout was helping him, but did not notice what the dog did. I told him though after he gave me my five Monopoly tickets, and he went over and cleaned it off.

I think the smallest crowd at Jewel is in the morning, and next time I am going to try to go there then. It had been 8 days since I had gone grocery shopping.

Federal law does allow people with disabilities to bring their service dogs into grocery stores.

I just haven't collected as many game pieces this year. I have not been going to Jewel as much lately, and I in general have not found many cashiers really generous with the game pieces. There is a cashier that works over at the Green Bay Wilmette store that was really generous with the game pieces when I used to visit the store late on Saturdays. He would frequently give me 30 game pieces. I don't work in Wilmette on Saturday evenings like I used to though. Also I notice that the lines are not nearly as long at the cash registers, and so I can't ask the person in front of me to give me their tickets. I also often find that there is nobody at customer service so I can get my free tickets.

We've grown quite fond of the chicken pot pies available at the staffed deli counter at the Jewel on Green Bay in Winnetka. The big problem with so many chicken pot pies is that they skimp on the chicken. Not these! Tons of chicken on the inside, and they're a very nice entree size, not just a kids or lunch size. And the crust (top only) is an excellent puff pastry. To top it all off, they're only $5 (and last week were on sale for $4). Beware, the instructions say to heat them at 350F for 12-15 minutes, which is ridiculous unless you like them cold; we heat them for 40 minutes so they're hot all the way through.

Hi- I just came back from the Chicago Ave. Jewel in Evanston. I had not done any grocery shopping for 9 days. On Thursday it became official. Everybody that enters a store in Evanston must wear a mask. It is the mayor's edict. They had somebody to make sure that everybody was wearing a mask, and they also limited the number of people in the store, and so I had to wait in line for 5-10 minutes before they let me in. Are all the Jewel stores limiting the number of people in the store now? They also had one way lanes which I did not realize until somebody pointed it out to me. There were some people waiting in line who were not 6 feet back. This is the first time I have been in the store since all this happened that there was actually a line at the registers. The other times I went there were not as many customers, and they had 4 registers open, and so there was no line. I used to enjoy going to the grocery store, but no more. I could not wait to get out. I used the self checkout today, and so I did not have to wait in line for that.

This weekend they have double Monopoly tickets. I only got a total of two tickets even when doubling. I noticed the game is ending on 5/5, and I am sure they are going to have lots of tickets left over. With the pandemic, I don't think as many people are playing the game. Last year they continued the game for another three days to get rid of the extra tickets.

I went to the one on Green Bay Road in Wilmette yesterday afternoon. No one was waiting and I walked right in. The store was not terribly crowded. However, they had small signs placed at six-foot intervals outside the store, so they have the capability to limit people if they do get too crowded.

At the one in Wilmette, there are very clear floor markings. There weren't any lines, but on our other recent visits there, people have been distancing properly.

Hi- The Monopoly game ends tomorrow, although if there are lots of tickets left, I suspect that they will continue to give them out until they run out.

I have 232 points to use, but unfortunately the grocery gift cards are gone. I was hoping that they would add some more, but they have not. The visa gift cards under the Fandango are out too, although I can still get the Fandango gift cards to redeem to rent or go to a theater to see a movie. I have no idea when the theaters will open up again. Does anybody have any idea how long the Fandango gift cards are good for? I can also get some grocery rewards, but there is a limit of 5 on those, and most of the grocery items there is a limit of one on each item. The only one I am interested in is the pasta one, and there is a limit of one on that. I might have to use the rest of them on sweetstakes.

I went to the Kosher Jewel on Howard tonight, and after I got finished checking out, I told the cashier that I was playing the Monopoly game, and she looked at my receipt, and noticed that I was supposed to get five, and so that is all she gave me. I then opened them up, and noticed I won two free Monopoly game pieces, and so I went to customer service to redeem it, and she only gave me two tickets. A few years ago I went to that very same store about a week before the game was supposed to end, and the cashier gave me a huge pile of the tickets. I then went to customer service to redeem some free tickets, and she gave me a whole box of game pieces. It was totally different today. BTW the Howard store used to be open 24 hours, and no they close on 10:00, and their customer service closes at 6:00.

I won a bottle of hand soap last week, but I don't think I will be able to redeem it before it expires. They did not have any tonight. Once the game ends, I won't have a really good reason to go to Jewel. Hope this helps, Nancy

If you used Monopoly tokens for grocery products, then use them before you use the paper coupons.

I used paper coupons for two grocery products, which I also had on my just4u account via the Monopoly game. I reasoned use the paper first, because I am more likely to misplace them.

I noticed the products where I submitted paper coupons also cleared out the coupon on the just4u account, too.

I have also pointed this out to Jewel, though I don't yet how they may respond.

Not me. Sometimes I don't even post these crazy beverages,but the Saturday sampler is like an old friend returning after disappearing for 2 months.

Man, I got to "Organic Locust" and was like, "Finally, an ingredient I recognize!"

Locust bean gum is a galactomannan vegetable gum extracted from the seeds of the carob tree and used as a thickening agent (gelling agent) in food technology.

A lot of folks will just look at the RDA listing -- 2 grams of fat, 8 of carbs, and 20 of protein. That's the goal for a lot of folks. Kind of on the keto spectrum.

I got my free bottle -- and it was pretty tasty. Seeing both monk fruit and stevia listed, I'd feared it might be over-sweet -- but it wasn't. Don't see myself standing in line to buy it, but if I hated vegetables, I might view this as an easy way to get them down.

I prefer real food, but I know folks who "eat to live" (hard to imagine), and for them, this would be perfect. For me, it was a free meal.

And I might consider it for my mom, as she doesn't always eat as she should, and at 93 and with dementia, it sometimes requires subterfuge to get her to consume a good amount of protein and veg. So I'd say it has a market.

Sometimes I’ll try one of the freebies just to see how awful it might be (I’m occasionally surprised, in both directions) or to keep up with the latest trends in food technology (eg, rebaudioside A, which is used in Iconic). I probably would’ve claimed this one, since I’ve never had a chocolate-kale beverage, but realized I was unlikely to visit Jewel in time.

There was not a whole lot of toilet paper to choose from. I went to WF on my way to Jewel, and they had no toilet paper.

In case this can help anyone:

Of all of the instacarting we've done over the past few months, I've come to the conclusion that Jewel Curbside is fantastic. You get all of the sale prices from the ads - even BOGO offers. We tested the waters last week on an item that was on sale in the ad, but the online price was different. the price online was 7.99, but the sale ad showed 2.99. Correct price was rung. (I had a feeling the online price was just not updated for whatever reason.)

Anyway, a new store was added to the list for our curbside pickup area, and it's pretty close. Two orders so far - no instacart prices, just Jewel prices, and they will throw it in your car for you. I always "help" load the car - with the teenagers they have working, no doubt they'll put 3lbs of bananas on the bottom and top it with all of your canned goods and whatever's the heaviest. We've gotten fish, ice cream, whatever. They obviously have some kind of holding area with correct refrigeration / freezing, too - so we'll get an email that says, "Hey, you can come get it anytime" after the order has been picked. It might be several hours earlier than your selected pickup time. Pretty nice.

Turkey Hill is a huge hit in this house. The texture is better, we think. The chocolate mint is a staple these days. I think we are all trying to find little pleasures and rituals to make these strange times a little more comfortable.
