I ordered a Dot, and on the first time using it managed to catch it on fire (the probe, not the Dot itself). It has a little plastic piece where the needle meets the cable that my prior ones did not. I read the manual, yet didn't realize it was that close to the broiler. Anyway, when Thermoworks sent me a note asking "hey, how's that Dot working for you?" I let them know I caught it on fire. Their next message was a shipping notice for a new probe. Nice CS Thermoworks! This was totally my fault, not theirs - I used it in contravention to the operating instructions, and I hadn't blamed them for the destruction, just stated the facts.

Thermoworks is now a corporate entity ranking up there with Weber, IMHO.

Monday I got a semi-boneless Aussie leg o' lamb ready to do our delayed Easter Din. Plugged in the Thermapen Chef's Alert or whatever it's called--the one you insert the probe in the food and then the food goes in the oven--probe and got a readout "No Probe." Ooops! Re-booted, got the same response. Sigh. Going to have to use the Thermapop instant read device instead. So I stuck the roast in and sent a quick email to Thermoworks asking for help. W/in 15mins I had a response that, yes, maybe the probe was gone, but first, check the batteries. Duh. I'd even forgotten that it *had* batteries! Opened the back, inserted two fresh new AAA batteries and bingo! I was back in biz. Wrote a quick thank you email.

That kind of response is admirable in today's world where, basically, most companies couldn't care less about after-purchase service.

Looks like my ancient digital thermometer has bit the dust. Thermoworks has the Classic Super-Fast Thermapen on sale for $59. Is this a good value? I’m not a heavy duty thermometer freak.

Yeah, I've got a couple of their pieces: they all work well, and are reliable. Good value for money.

    Yes, very much so.
$59 for a Classic Super-Fast Thermapen is excellent value for your dollar.

I put this to more use than I initially thought I would. I used it to check if bread is finished.

When I was reheating the Rouladen yesterday, I used my thermometer to check the internal temperatures. While the pot was actively simmering, they had an internal temp of 110. I let them heat until at least 140.

For the cevapcici today, I also used them to check the meat temperature before pulling.

I use it to check the temperature of the refrigerator by putting a clean tip in the milk.

I even took my own temperature (with plastic wrapped around it), when I could not find the thermometer.

It is a very handy tool.

Great products. Ones you use all the time and never need to think about. They just do what they're supposed to do for a long time. I've never had one fail. The drop-off in quality from Thermapen to its alternatives is steep.

We use Javatools Javelin thermometers at our spots. At $26.99 right now on Amazon I don't feel too bad if we lose one or it breaks. I have also gotten bonus points when I follow the health Inspector around with the instant read! I have been at many BBQ events and maybe had one or 2 extra beverages and misplaced a few. The sting isn't as bad with this price tag. It is just as good IMHO. Keep on cooking all!
