    Can't believe I scooped Artie! ;-)

    So...

You grab a bottle and proceed to the checkout, say the magic word, and presto! No charge?

The checkout clerks know about this?

I usually say that the item is the word of the day freebie and then give the word. I feel like the clerks at my local Jewel (Edgewater) are up on these promos.

    Congrats on scooping me!

The clerks have a sheet of paper with the barcode on it at every register that they scan and will result in you getting the product for free. There was some confusion when jewel first started these giveaways but it rarely occurs now.

I may have had a problem once, but pretty much smooth sailing with those words of the day. Last time for the sorghom cereal, the cashier just hit the free button for me and the person in front of me. No WOD needed.

For the recent Bush beans promo, we ended up with multiple cans because they had already been marked as sold and the clerk apparently wanted them gone. :-)

I popped in my Jewel yesterday for some yogurt, and couldn't find those peppers. The picture in the app shows they are canned, so I made a very conservative attempt at finding them. If anyone has any luck, please give a head's up on where you found them.

We are fortunate they do this, because other Jewel stores do not.

Word-of-the-day products in some stores are at locations one would never expect. The Jewel in Waukegan has sent me on a few wild goose chases. When I have to hunt that hard, I will grab a few more to share with people standing in line with me. Who does not like free?

The Monopoly game is going on again. I just looked at the prizes, and they are giving away almost a million free bagels and donuts. I got at least five of those coupons last year. One of the $1,000,000 prizes is going to be an instant win. They pay you off every year for 30 years though. You don't get all the money at once. I wonder if Jewel is going to be around for another 30 years?

    Hi,

I would not worry. What Jewel will do is buy an annuity policy designed to pay your winnings. The lottery does the same thing: when the person accepts the lesser amount, it was the money intended to buy an annuity.

I hope Shutterfly is a prize. If nobody to wishes to use their Shutterfly coupons, I use them for some of my not-for-profit projects. For Highland Park's 150th anniversary last year, I created a montage of images.

Hi- The WOD today 2/9, is a bag of Ghiradelli chocolate hearts. The word is valentine. The Saturday sampler is a Lifeway keifer drink. Go to J4U to redeem that. I also have a free protein drink on my zip, and on some store zip codes there is either a free or $.99 a bag little snapper apples, $.99 a gallon milk, and $.99 simply orange.

Today 2/9 is national bagel day, and Jewel has all of their bagels on sale for 2/$1. For those people who have not signed up for J4U yet because you think it is not worth it, I save probably at least $3 a week by using it. You get personalized deals every week based on what you normally buy. I get quarts of Lucerne yogurt for $2.29 most weeks, and I also get personalized deals on Michialinas frozen dinners. This week I can get them for $.86. Last year they were a bonus Monopoly ticket item too. I only buy the lean gourmet lasagna one. I also have double points on produce and meat and seafood. I also have a spend $40 get $4 back. I rarely spend $40 at one time at Jewel though.

If you shop at more than one Jewel too, you can go to J4U and under store enter in whatever zip code you use, and then certain offers come up that will not come up in other zip codes. For example, I shop at both the Evanston Chicago Ave. store and the Wilmette Green Bay store. I might get different offers depending on which zip code I enter. Hope this helps, Nancy

I never thought about this, but my experience supports this micro-marketing.

For some years, I helped a friend who shopped the Jewel in Wheaton. There were promotions there, which did not materialize in Highland Park. Once talking to customer service, I learned a nearby Jewel had a substantial discount coupon not offered at the Wheaton store. Customers from the other store showed up at Wheaton expecting to use the same coupon and were turned away. It was a frustration to the staff who had to turn them down.

Thank you for highlighting all these little twists and turns. My only complaint about Just4U is how the points never roll over to the next month. First of the month, your account is wiped clean.

You can enter in the zip code for the Wheaton store though when you sign in to J4U, and the deals for that store will come up and you can add them to your account, and buy them at another Jewel store for the same price. I think when a particular Jewel store has new competition, that is when you get the $.99 milk and other great deals

The Monopoly game is very different this year. Only two board pieces per game piece, and fewer prizes on the board. The online part seems very similar, with up to $25 gift certificates available, and reward points for 30 tokens. I'd put the value of reward points at around $1.50 (most are worse but 2 tokens gets $3 in produce), and the tokens about 1/15-1/25 of a dollar

I was in the Jewel on Green Bay in Wilmette yesterday, and I noticed the organic produce was not in its usual location. The organic veggies were moved, and it looks like the department has been downsized. I did not see any organic baby carrots. What I did notice was that the already cut up fruits and veggies section has been vastly expanded, and has taken over the spot previously held by the organic veggies. They have tons of bags of cut up veggies such as broccoli and cauliflower for $5. It looks like there is less than a pound of veggies in each bag. Does anybody here buy these bags of cut up veggies?

    "Antioxidant, caffeinated, flavored sparkling water."
I might drink mine next summer sometime.
The Oikos yogurt drink a week ago was caffeinated, as well.

I bet both would be a hit at the bbq's where the potato salad has raisins.
