Hi- I do most of my shopping at Jewel or the farmer's market, and as far as I know Jewel does not carry stollen or lindt cake. Aldi's originated in Germany, and so they have several German food fests during the year. That is why they carry stollen around the holidays. Most of the year they do not carry it. Jerry's has a lot of foreigners shopping in the store, and I am sure that is why they carry lindt cake.

You could have just bought some individual slices of cake at Jewel or even Whole Foods. I prefer the bakery at Whole Foods to Jewel. You could have also served ice cream.

Apropos of little, at least to me as I don't typically shop at Jewel and the last time I had frozen pizza was freezer burned cardboard tossed into a machine in a upper Wisconsin bar circa 1975

I should have included a warning about "Mike's Ultimate Pizza". I had it once before because Jewel was giving it away for free. It was not something I would ever buy again but hey...Rugrats will eat anything, so it's cheap eating for the kiddies whose taste buds haven't developed yet. :)

My point you say, Turkey Hill Premium was Cook's Illustrated top choice for nationally available chocolate ice cream.
Turkey Hill has become my favorite supermarket ice cream. I especially like their Fudge Ripple.

I missed this notice, but at Jewel this evening I could see telltale boxes stacked by the manager.

I looked over a vacant cashier station to find the notice with the magic words: oat crunch.

Walked out with a box of cereal I might have missed.

Thanks for keeping us clued in.

I was at the Evanston Jewel on Chicago Ave. this afternoon, and I noticed that the customer in front of me had at least 10 jars of Rao's she was purchasing. I asked her what the deal was. She said it is currently on sale B1G1F. I asked her if it was as good as I heard it was. She said it is her all time favorite jarred pasta sauce. I know there are a lot of Rao's fans here. I assume the sale ends on 12/17. I already have two jars of pasta sauce left that I bought on sale last winter for $1 a jar, but I have never tried Rao's before, and I might go back and buy two jars of it. It is normally $8 a jar, and so you get 2 for $8. Hope this helps, Nancy

    NFriday -

Probably something you already know since you follow shopping deals:
You might be able to get that Rao's for cheaper if you look at the Jewel ad weekly. Stores jack up the price in small print, and throw the big fonts at "BOGO."

3 very quick examples I found when looking at this week's Jewel ad. I look through the ads religiously on Wednesdays when they come out, so I can plan my shoppping trips. I live very close to , or, I drive by the big grocery stores to/from work, so I can pop in and grab the loss leaders during slow traffic times, so I keep an eye out for what's good:

Quaker Instant Oatmeal - 3.99 BOGO.
They frequently have this on sale for 3 for $5.

The big jug of Vinegar is 2.99 BOGO
I'd rather pay the 99c price it usually goes on sale for.

Also note that their ad doesn't have prices on some things. I looked at the shelf price of the nabisco crackers and cookies BOGO, because there is no price in the ad. My store's shelf price was 3.99. Again, they frequently have them at 3 for $5. Matter of fact, I think only a few weeks ago (just before Bird Day) they had that price, and I bought quite a few.

If the person you saw didn't split up her cart at paytime, she may have gotten hosed. The Raos has a limit in the ad for my store.

    OTOH:
The Doritos price of 1.88 this week...
Mark my words, you'll see them priced at 3.99 or 4.29 BOGO sooner than later.

Of course, none of these specific products matter if you are not interested in them, but just beware of these pricing shenanigans these stores employ. I don't blame them for doing it - I would too.

My targets this week at Jewel:
Saturday's ghiradelli choc chips at 99c.

Choice NY Strips at 4.99 for the freezer.

Doritos at 1.88 (I've seen better Jewel prices, but we are road tripping for xmas. Solidifying the snacks is worth the few cents more)

The Navel Oranges at 59c/lb are pretty strong. We've eaten a few, and they are better than we were expecting. Heavy and huge!

Progresso soup 1.99 BOGO. The "light" soups are good for that price, imo. And Jr likes a few varieties of the regular ones for thermos lunches. We stocked up big time. Usually, the 99 cent sales are only the basic varieties of progresso. This 1.99 bogo is pretty much all flavors.

Oikos 88c (I have a Toasted Coconut addition)

I hear ya, seebee; I like Jewel but I've got no patience for their BOGO "sales" when the price for one is jacked up to at least double the usual price. They do this all the time with pork ribs and pork chops, for example. As a fellow fan and careful reader of the store ads that come in the mail (my favorite day of the week), I seek to save time by (a) skimming right past prices that I know are typical rather than sale prices and (b) ignoring BOGO sales in which the single-item price is not shown in the ad. In the store, I save time by not even looking at the refrigerated meat case of BOGO "sales."

To their credit, it should be said Jewel does also advertise some BOGO sales that are good deals. For example, this week Twinings tea is 2/1 at $3.99; you won't often catch Jewel or anyone else selling a single box of Twinings for $2. Various types of chips when they go on sale for $1.88 are deal too, I think.

Yup. I got 6 of those teas.
Also, if you are an olive fan, i just picked up 6 cans of collosal size. 1.49 bogo. 75c each is pretty decent.

They have a flash sale today. Utz chips, 99c.

    Sneaky cereal prices:
Select gm 1.99 (must buy in quantity of twos) amd the j4u has a 1.00 off of 2 coupon for clipping. So, i grabbed 2 hn cheerios for 1.50 each.

Also, sugary Post brands are 1.49 (must buy in quantity of twos) and j4u has a 50 c coupon. I got suckered into buying "banana pudding nilla wafer," and "nutter butter" cereal. Don't you judge me.

Found a few more inch thick ny strips at 4.99 /lb. Lookin like ny eve steaks will be strips.

Seebee,I believe the regular price of Rao's is $7.98 and the BOGO makes it the cheapest I've ever seen. My store (Munster) was already sold out by Friday afternoon and Homewood on Halsted didn't even carry it.

Hi- I just looked at Jewel's ad, and there is a limit of four on the Rao's, and she definitely had more than four, because I wouldn't have asked her why she was buying so much if that was all she bought. At $4 I could see myself buying a few, but noway am I paying $8. I have had a virus since Tuesday, and I have not been as interested in what the sales are, and I still saved 41% on my purchases at Jewel. The primary reason I went to Jewel was because I needed kleenex and mucinex. They had the store brand of mucinex for $9.95 B2G1F, but I did not need three boxes, and so that was the only thing I bought that was not a deal. I only bought one box.

I bought two bags of the chocolate chips only because they were only $.99, but on another board that I post on, somebody was complaining because Jewel did not carry their white chocolate or mini chocolate chips.

It's even worse at the meat counter: it's truly annoying to have to get 'piece'-type items like pork chops or shrimp in two packages just to get the BOGO price. Terrible waste of non-recyclable packing materials.

I went to the Skokie Jewel tonight to get some Rao's, and all they had left was Vodka Rao's left. I ended up getting two and I went to CS to get a rain check, but they were closed. I asked the cashier that checked me out if I could get a rain check, and he walked over to CS and wrote me out a rain check. Hopefully the vodka sauce is good. They had lots of that. They also had Rao's marinara sauce, but that was $8.99 and was not on sale.

They also had Tabatchnick frozen soup B1G1F and so I bought four of those. I love their soup. After I got my raincheck on my Rao's, I checked my receipt, and discovered that I only got one free soup. When I went back to the soup, I discovered that the Southwest soup was not B1G1F. It was the only soup that was not. I have never had the Southwest soup before. I hope it is good. While I was in the store tonight, I noticed that they had mango's for $3.99 a carton. I decided to pass, but somebody else might be interested. I found a few ripe ones. Hope this helps, Nancy

I'm not "anti-Jewel." I shop there very frequently. They've actually lowered prices on their sale items several years ago probably to stay relevant. I don't knock them for these bogo deals, I actually think it's comical.

I haven’t been a fan of their BOGO sales nor their $5 portion control packages so prominently displayed as you walk in the door.

Their $0.99 / lb meat deals have been great! Some great pricing on the chicken family packs as well.
