Post #2 - March 17th, 2009, 12:37 pmI got this email too. I can't say enough great things about this thermometer. It's incredibly fast, the tip of the probe is very thin, and it's been very durable. I managed to break (they just stopped responding completely) several probe thermometers in the span of a couple years, so I took the plunge. Awesome thermometer.

I've always been tempted by the high geek factor of the IR thermometers
Edit: I asked myself, "When was the last time I wished I could measure the surface temperature of something?" When I couldn't come up with an answer, I took that as a sign that I really don't need an infrared thermometer.
However, I do love instant-read thermometers, but my cheap grocery store ones keep breaking/failing on me. In for one gray regular Thermapen

Post #7 - March 18th, 2009, 9:36 pmLet me add another extremely positive 'review' of the thermapen. I have a few different models and not only are they responsive and reliable but they're also very durable. Using one almost feels like cheating.

This is a good question. The combo IR/probe thermapen is the same price as the probe only model. Is there any reason to think that the probe function of the combo model does not work as well as the probe only pen? The temperature range of the combo model is slightly more narrow, but otherwise the specs are about the same.
Seems like the IR function might come in handy from time to time. Why not have both? Any thoughts?I don't know what you think about dinner, but there must be a relation between the breakfast and the happiness. --Cemal Süreyya

Never tried the combo unit but we do use one of their dedicated IR devices and it works very well. We use it to measure the temperature inside of trucks that pickup and deliver food products at our warehouse. It's reliable, durable and lots of fun to play with, too!

An official response from ThermoWorks sales:We have a couple of Thermapens available right now. We have the original super fast Thermapen that is currently on close out for $74 each. We have the new Splash Proof Thermapen which is $96 each, and of course the combo unit which you have seen for $69 each. The original Thermapen will give you a reading in about 3-4 seconds, the splash proof in about 2-3 seconds, and the combo will give you a reading in about 8-9 seconds. The original is accurate to within about ±1°C, the splash proof to within ±0.4°C, and the combo to within ±2°C. The original and splash proof Thermapens also come with a certificate of calibration and they have bigger numbers which are easier to read. The Splash proof had a much longer battery life and of course is water resistant which is a big plus. We’ve also moved the temperature display a little closer to the probe on the splash proof so it’s a little easier to read.
So, short answer, aesthetics aside, the probe on the combo unit isn't as fast or as accurate as the plain old thermapen. There is a tradeoff.

This seems somewhat misleading, in checking the link Thermapro does not appear to be made by ThermoWorks. ThermoWorks is tip top and, while you probably don't need a Thermapen for occasional use, though the Classic on sale for $71 is a good buy, either the ThermoPop for $29 or RT600C for $19 will serve you well. ===> Link

When I enter in thermoworks on Amazon, all that comes up is one for $89, which people suspect is a fake one. Apparently you can only buy anything from thermoworks on their website. Just bought one, the price was dependent on which color thermometer was selected. Fortunately, my favorite color red is $59.

I only buy orange, red or some other bright color. If you have ever been at the end of a late night BBQ cook, or busy restaurant kitchen, looking through the garbage because your Thermapen got swept into the trash will know why.

I always wished it had a light for the display and the new Mk4 has one (plus it's waterproof and the display readout rotates with you). It's normally $100 but on Black Friday it was going for $75. I ordered one along with a silicone "boot" which protects it from heat and accidental falls plus it has magnets so I don't have to have it in the drawer anymore.
