With the closing of Klas in Cicero, Bohemian Café in Omaha may be the country's oldest Czech/Bohemian restaurant. For a few more weeks anyway—Bohemian Café will close in September. The restaurant has been a neighborhood fixture since 1924, though the current location dates only from the 1950s. A crowd of a hundred, looking forward to one last plate of svickova or roast duck, gathered before opening on a recent Sunday.

You know the drill: start with a Pilsner, rye bread and liver dumpling soup.

Then on to svickova, bread dumplings and sweet cabbage. And gravy (that should go without saying).

Homemade strudel tempted, but a poppy seed kolacky seemed more manageable.

The food was very good, but even if it hadn't been, the visit would have been more than worthwhile.

I feel fortunate I got to eat at this fine old restaurant. Bohemian Café will open for the last time on September 24, 2016. Plenty of time to plan your trip.

That is a shame. I have had several meals there and it is my "go to" place in Omaha ... other than when I am heading to Hy-Vee.

Damn, what a shame.... I've eaten there many times, and, like jlawrence, it's my go-to spot in Omaha (we've got Hy-Vee in Kansas City).

Rye bread and liver dumpling soup are an unbeatable first course.

    So sorry to hear this.
