Just a factoid to add to Dick's post above. King Salmon is actually Chinook. The name "King" seems relatively new. I guess "Chinook" was just too hard for Safeway's clientele to pronounce, or maybe it was too ethnic sounding. None of my relatives from the area ever call it "King". Coho is still my favorite, though it lacks that deep red color that Chinook has. Funny they should change Chinook, but not "Sockeye".

    Hi,

I remember maybe 20 years ago, Dominick's would annually have a sale of wild caught salmon from Alaska for 99 cents a pound. Are we talking about these same fish now at a premium price?

The lox were a hit at the Sunday brunch.
I remeber too that salmon was very cheep 20 years ago, so was most seafood. I could get a pound of cod for a buck (it wasn't fresh but frozen) and fresh shrimp from the gulf for 3-5 bucks a pound and they were big. Trucks would set up in shopping centers and sell them by the pound (yes they had the heads on). They had wonderful flavor and smelled like the sea.

Same fish, what you saw 20 years ago was probably coho at that price but King(Chinook) would not be far ahead.

Saw Copper River King at Grash's in Milwaukee for $44.95/# Saturday. Highest price I have seen.
I purchase Halibut cheeks at Grash's which so far this season have been superb.-Dick

My memory of the 99 cent salmon at Dominick's years ago was that they were pink salmon and no bargain even at that price.

They were pinks the years I got them at that price.

While most Alaskans consider pinks fit only for dog food, I remember they were okay when I smoked them.

I also remember there were a couple of years Dominick's was sold out when I got there and I received a rain check. Even after talking to the store Manager, Dominick's would never honor those rain checks. (Why I Hate Dominick's) :x

Bought a few yrs ago at Whole Foods. Did not like the taste. Nothing wrong with the salmon, just a different flavor that I did not like.
Try them and see. Great price.

Swallowed hard and paid the $24/lb for CR sockeye at Whole Foods last weekend. Have not seen it anywhere else in town other than Dirk's.

    Anyone seen it someplace else?

Copper River salmon at Fresh Farms on Touhy yesterday for $24 a pound. Instead we bought equally lovely wild-caught Alaskan sockeye for $20 a pound. The fillet cost $30 but only $20 after using a $10 off coupon we got in the mail from Fresh Farms.

PS The Fresh Farms on Touhy does not know when the new Fresh Farms will open on Golf Road in Niles. "Soon." She said. "Soon."

We've got a couple places in Grand Rapids that have CR sockeye. I bought some last weekend from Fish Lads in the downtown market. Really tasty fish! I've not seen any place that has chinook though. The guy I talked to at Fish Lads didn't sound to confident that they would be getting any either. Any place over there that has CR chinook?

Is it true that Sockeye is not farmed - meaning that if you see Sockeye you can be sure it is wild-caught? I think I may have read something to that effect, but can't vouch for its veracity.

The new Whole Foods in Elmhurst had CR Salmon for $19.99/lb when they first opened last week--sounded like they planned to keep that price for a while.

I've had good and bad luck with the Costco fish - sometimes it's great, other times it's mushy and old-tasting :(

I got some of the CR Sockeye from Dirk's that I plan to grill tonight. I had some yesterday on their Big Green Egg grill (thanks Amir!) and it was really good.

It's a little early in the season for king, isn't it? Don't they usually run a little later?

If we are talking specifically Copper River, no. CR Kings have a short season, early to mid-May through June. CR Sockeye are mid-May into August. CR Coho are August-September.

They had CR King at Dirk's.

We liked the Sockeye I mentioned above. Simply grilled, with salt and pepper.

We picked up some beautiful Copper River King at Dirk's May 24, and cooked it sous vide. While I usually like fish cooked in this method, it absolutely zapped this fish of its special features, and it's color. Anyone else try this? If so, I hope you fared better.

I picked up some and asked - the guy at the counter thought the price was going to be 19.99 through 6/16. I grilled the piece I bought yesterday and it was very tasty. I'll be back for more...

For the first time in a while I got it off the fire before I overcooked it. Maybe using an open grill instead of a kettle made that easier.

I would love for this thread to turn into a price watch thread. I am shocked by the fish prices. It is as expensive as meat, why?
We would have meat a few time a week. But only on sale can we now.
