Thanks, for the tip but I'd rather cook over gas than buy anything at Walmart. :x

Yeah, I think you're right. I probably shouldn't have brought up the digression (though, the title of the thread made it hard not to) but I'd happily pay more for it (or anything) from a locally-owned and operated business.

How about I buy bunch of these for 8 bucks and sell it to you for 12.97? That way you're supporting a small small time business owner? I'm sorry if I offended your principles. I thought I'd just pass this on to people looking for a good deal and maybe perhaps don't have the financial resources to do the "right thing" as you do. Perhaps I should rename this thread to, "Get thee to Blown Z" and maybe perhaps more people would buy them

I'm sure some here find your post helpful. I thought we were just talking here. Neither I nor my principles are offended.

Why would you throw in a jar of fake French mustard that's made in New Jersey? Is that supposed to entice me? :P

Get thee to Berger Brothers. They sell 40 pound bags of this stuff (and probably 20 lb bags also). Roughly the same great low price everyday, maybe lower.

20-pounders of Royal Oak lump are about $12 after tax at Berger Bros, so slightly more expensive on a per-pound basis -- although as has been said in other threads, in addition to whatever good one finds in supporting local business, you can generally count on Berger Bros. product to have been handled appropriately (cutting down on breakage and the resultant small pieces/charcoal dust). Not sure on pricing for the 40-pounders; just has never been a practical size for me seeing as how I've got to lug the bag from my basement to my patio every time I want to grill/smoke due to outside storage constraints.

Ok this is getting ridiculous, all I wanted to do was pass on a good deal but it seems that I struck a sour chord with some members here. For one thing I live 2.5 hours from Berger Bros so that's not an option for me. Darren if you'd like to pay for my gas to get there and back then I'll buy it from Berger Bros. I live in the country where Walmart is pretty much the only grocery store here besides Kroger and County Market covering a 25 mile radius and all they pretty much sell is Kingsford briquettes. Ironically it's through these forums I learned that they suck because of the fillers they use and to seek out Royal Oak lump charcoal instead which I've never even heard of until this thread http://www.lthforum.com/bb/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=19634. So I go to the only source for this product readily available to me which is heartily endorsed by esteemed members of this site thinking that I'm achieving lump charcoal nirvana and now I'm getting knocked for where I'm getting it from? Sure I could cook over gas but at least whatever I grill or smoke with my Walmart purchased Royal Oak will taste better

I don't think it was clear that you have so few options out where you are. So if your only practical choices are Royal Oak vs. Kingsford, then I'd fully support getting the RO at Walmart. But I'd also support you moving closer to the city where you'd have more options. Although, better deals/supporting local businesses only for charcoal may not be the most compelling reason to move.

Definitely. Since someone disagrees with you, this whole place must be going to shit. We all post our personal opinions. That is the very nature of this site. That said, the site itself does not have an opinion.

I (and others here) are hardly the only ones who think that Walmart is horrible. The City of Chicago has fought their entry here vigorously for years. Northbrook just fought them off as well.

I'm very comfortable with my opinion about Walmart and will not shy away from sharing it when the very title of the a thread advocates shopping there.

Agreed and any useful piece of information on where to source, especially when there is a good deal, it is always appreciated by me.

Even if you live in Chicago, going to Berger Brother's - who is a distributor not a producer - is a roughly a 7 or 7:30 am to 4 pm operating hours Monday through Friday. It is not convenient if you work conventional hours or live 25 miles north of city as I do.

I go to Berger Brothers just as I go to Walmart. I can live with myself, too!

You do realize that this is because Walmart came in and caused all of the local shops to close? Those people working at Walmart are quite often ex-business owners who were forced out by Walmart. Then, when Walmart has sucked the life out of the town, they'll close and leave town, and all of the local businesses that were once there are gone, and what are you left with?

I think we all understand that options may be limited in certain areas, but Walmart is to BLAME for that. Nothing against those who shop where it is convenient, as I think most do just that, just a point that the big picture can often be missed. If you CAN, shop local :)

I''m sorry I don't have twice the income required t to survive and pay my bills. I can't always afford to pay twice as much to "support the local guy."
How much do the baggers at TJs make?? I be some of them live off food stamps too. I applied for food stamps once, but was denied because I made too much money off of unemoloyment while I was out of work in bad health and could not even pay my mortgage. I used to shop at my local grocery but it sucked.
I'm sorry, but I'm not too f-ing pretentious to shop at Walmart.........
