Anyone have any sources on true heritage chicken in Chicago? By true heritage chicken I'm talking about a chicken with a heritage pedigree bloodline that wasn't born in a commercial hatchery. Closest source I can find is Frank Reese in Kansas.

Might want to try Ellen Malloy if you haven't already. I've seen lots of her posts about raising chickens on Facebook so she'd possibly be a resource for breed info or know who is.

You could also try a PM or email (if he has one on his profile) to Freezer Pig.

Caveny Farms raises heritage turkeys, geese and ducks. They are wonderful, approachable people so if it was your mission to bring Heritage Chickens to a nearby farm, you might have a conversation with them.

I don't know how I missed this line, the first time I read this thread.

Sorry, I won't be able to help in the pure heritage chicken quest. I know a few people that raise them, but the chicks all come from commercial hatcheries.

Good luck in your search, let us know how it turns out.

Yeah, the most respected definition for heritage includes "Naturally mating without artificial human intervention," which excludes chickens from commercial hatcheries.

It's pretty interesting how rare this is.
