Hi,

I was at the ghost ship Dominick's in Bannockburn this afternoon. There is still some frozen foods and lots of cream cheese available at 75% off. Everything on the shelf is full price.

It's a skeleton crew. When I checked out, it was the bookkeeper who processed my order. The cashier was on break.

And with the Dominick's stores that will become Mariano's closing last weekend, the Bannockburn store is the last vestige of a once proud franchise. Does anybody have a spreadsheet that lists each Dominick's location and what its fate is such as permanently closing, converting into a Mariano's, etc.?

So, they ARE buying the Dominick's location on Green Bay Road in Evanston, right at the Wilmette border. Wonder which of the other two Evanston locations they will close? Logic would dictate the central Chicago Ave. store, if for nothing more than the dreadful parking alone, but that is by far the closest full-service market to NU. I bet South Evanston goes.

Hi- When I went into the Jewel store on Green Bay two weeks ago to get a flu shot, I commented to the pharmacist how busy the store had gotten since Dominick's closed, and he told me that he worked at the Dominick's Green Bay store until they closed. I told him that I heard that Whole Foods was not moving in there, and he told me that they were not because they could not get out of their lease on their South Evanston location. He also told me that Mariano's considered taking over the store, but decided that there was not enough parking. I got the impression talking to this guy that the store was going to remain vacant for the foreseeable future, or at least until Whole Food's lease expires on their South Evanston location. THe Dominick's store has to be at least twice the size of the South Evanston WF, and it's nowhere near the downtown Evanston store.

Drove past the old Dominick's at the corner of Buffalo Grove Rd. and Dundee Rd., and there was a banner hanging up at the entrance for Garden Fresh. As impressive as Garden Fresh up on Route 60 has become, this could be a good thing for those of us who are closer to BG.

I am hearing that Heinens, the Cleveland based grocery chain, will be eventually taking over both the Lake Bluff and Bannockburn stores to go with their store in Barrington and the one they are opening in glenview.

I was wondering if Heinen's would be the choice for Bannockburn. Ok, I'll take that. I wonder if Mariano's would still attempt to open where Beeson's is if they closed? Then again, with Mariano's coming to Northbrook, I guess I don't need one in Bannockburn.

Per Dave148's post above, according to the Trib's website, the fates of 7 more former Dominick's stores have now been officially decided. They're being purchased by Whole Foods and are slated to open next year.

The store locations are:
- 1 N. Halsted St. in the West Loop
- 225 E. Grand Ave. in Streeterville
- 959 W. Fullerton Ave. in Lincoln Park
- 6009 N. Broadway Ave. in Edgewater
- 6300 S. Robert Kingery Hwy. in Willowbrook
- 2748 Green Bay Road in Evanston
- 215 S. Route 83 in Elmhurst

Hi- That is interesting. WF is going to have three stores in Evanston. I bet you once their lease expires on their South Evanston location, they will close that store. It sounds like none of these stores will open up until next year some time though. When Whole Foods opens up on Green Bay though, I don't know how much they are going to hurt business at the Jewel down the street.

Hi- Here ia a link to a map posted on Crain's, listing the latest status of all of the Dominick's stores. Somebody just posted it on Jill Cataldo's site.

It is interesting and kind of depressing that out of the 72 Dominick's stores that have or are closing, 42 of them are going to remain vacant for the foreseeable future. There are some locations though such as the Bannockburn one, where there are several chains that have are considering taking over the store. The Lincolnwood store is also listed as currently vacant, and I thought I heard that possibly Cermak Fresh Markets or the other Cermak chain was going to take over the store.

I wish somebody would take over the Morton Grove store, the only other option in that neighborhood is Produce World, which is not that great. The next closest is Tony's, which I have heard is great, but it is a ways away. The closest Dominick's too me, at Dempster/Dodge in Evanston, is not being taken over, and the only options in that neighborhood are Food4Less, which I don't care for, and Jewel and Whole Foods. The next closest one on Green Bay in Evanston, is being taken over by Whole Foods, which already has two stores in Evanston. Hope this helps, Nancy

Thanks for the map! I was looking for something just like this. I suppose I'm lucky getting a Mariano's since my store was one green dot in a sea of purple ones.

Hi- Somebody just posted on one of the couponing blogs that I visit, that everything at the Bannockburn Dominick's is 75% off now. The store is only open from 10:00-6:00 every day now. Apparently there is still a lot of detergent and toilet paper left, and I am sure a lot of Fancy Feast for Cathy. They must have settled their dispute with the landlord. I have no idea how much longer the store is going to remain open. Hope this helps, Nancy

Don't count on it. Per the article in Ronnie's link above: “Evanston is a very vibrant community and they can support three stores,” said Allison Phelps, a Whole Foods spokeswoman.

I thought the South Evanston location couldn't survive simultaneously with the downtown Evanston location when they acquired it (it was formerly People's Market and then Wild Oats). But each has succeeded by appealing to its respective markets (the downtown one catering to Northwestern and downtown workers, many of whom walk there, and the South one by catering to those who drive there from the southern half of Evanston and Rogers Park).

Hi- I know there are many people, me included that hate the parking lot at the downtown Evanston location too, and purposely shop at the South Evanston store for that reason. Apparently Trader Joe's has not hurt the South Evanston store that much after all. I went in Trader Joe's three times the first month it was open, and I have not been there since then. BTW You have until 2/15 to turn in your Dominick's card at Whole Foods, and get $15 off a $50 purchase.

I was in the Jewel across the street from Whole Foods last week, and they were not crazy busy like the Jewel on Green Bay in Wilmette has been. I just drove by the Green Bay Dominick's today, and they have signs up telling people that Whole Foods is opening soon, even though they are not supposed to open up until sometime next year.

Shop owners who depended on nearby Dominick's grocery stores to drive traffic their way got great news this month: Whole Foods Market Inc. confirmed it would take over seven just-vacated locations in Chicago and the suburbs.

Now comes the bad news: None of those new Whole Foods supermarkets will open until sometime in 2015, meaning the little guys will have to fend for themselves for at least a year as the upscale retailer slowly remodels the sites.

Dominick's in Bannockburn is now officially closed. The signage has been taken down. Sign at the door simply states, 'Dominick's is closed."

Hi- I emailed several friends of mine that lived in that area, and one of them went there on 2/7, and she said that the toilet paper and detergent was mostly gone, but that she got lots of canned goods, and so she was thankful for my email. When I told one of my friends that lives in Deerfield about the sale last Tuesday when I saw her, she replied that the store closed on December 28th, and I replied that it was still open, and that is why they still had lots of stuff left, because people assumed that they were closed. Well they are finally closed now.

According to a Daily Herald article yesterday that I am too incompetent to link to, it is official that Heinens will be going into the Bannockburn location. No word yet on Lake Bluff.

Heinen's Fine Foods said Tuesday that it has leased a 62,000-square-foot anchor store at Bannockburn Green shopping center in Bannockburn, joining other grocers planning expansions around the suburbs.

Passed by the empty Dominick's at the intersection of Rand, Arlington Heights, and Palatine Roads. Sign in window said it was going to be a new Joe Caputo and Sons.

As for stevez's comment about Jewel -- maybe not the next one to kick around -- at least not if the one near me is any indication. It has clearly taken its cue from Mariano's -- reasonably priced salad bar and olive bar, samples being handed out, someone making fresh juices near the front -- just a lot nicer than before. I'm still more likely to be at one of the area's many ethnic grocery stores, but sometimes one just needs the standards, or needs them at 11pm, and Jewel, at least in Arlington Heights, is now not only convenient, but actually kind of fun to visit.

I'm not finding stevez's comment, but like you, I think Cerberus may be doing something right. I have an intangible sense of improvement at our Jewel, the one at Ashland and Wellington. I can't put my finger on the changes, but I'm picking up on something as of the last few visits. Just a sense of "the place knows what it's doing" that (remarkably) I didn't have before.

As for not finding his comment, I think it was one of those situations where I thought I was on the last page, but I was a few pages back, but when you add a comment, it goes to the end. So it's out there somewhere -- and who knows, maybe it predates the changes at Jewel.

But I'm glad to know someone else has noticed the changes. It's a much nicer store now.
