Steve Dolinsky did a piece yesterday on Johnson's Farm Produce. By coincidence I stopped by there yesterday on the way back from a meeting in Valparaiso. The berries I purchased were picked earlier in the day. They were small,much smaller then in the video piece,but really juicy and flavorful. They're having a big festival this weekend.

Just got an e-mail that McCann's strawberry farm in Woodstock, IL that they will be open for strawberry picking every day from 8-4. We had a nice time there last year--small operation, nice folks. And a stop at The Spot in Marengo for a burger makes for a nice 1-2 punch

We picked some fantastic strawberries at Frank Farms in Berrien Center, Michigan on Sunday. The bushes were loaded - definitely the easiest picking we have ever had for strawberries. All are deep red, plump, juicy and very sweet. Price was $1.25/lbs.

Bumper crop this year for sure. Almost perfect growing conditions, though a bit wet and cool. This accoring to the longtime local berry farmers in SW MI. Next up: the cherry trees are unreal this year. In a decade of going out there in summers, I have never seen trees loaded down like this. It's as if they have doubled up after losing all the fruit last year.

Hi- If upicking strawberries is not an option for you, you need to get to the local farmer's market and purchase strawberries and other home grown fruit. There should be a few cherries this week, and I saw red raspberries at Evanston last Saturday. There is going to be a ton of fruit this summer, and a whole lot more than last summer, and the farmers need your business.

My sister that has the farm, has a picture on her farm's facebook page that she took at the Benton Harbor Meijer's a few days ago. Meijer's had a big sign in their produce section advertising the fact that they carries home grown produce, and underneath the sign they had a pile of California berries. Meijer's does carry way more local produce than Dominick's and Jewel ever does though, and you can go there in August and find homegrown peaches. Thanks, Nancy

Picked a lot of my own berries this afternoon, after my cheery postwoman wrote a note on a piece of my junk mail that observed, "You've got some nice berries out there - better pick them FAST!" Cracked me up. She was right. After the berry border being a complete bust last year, it was great to go out, spend maybe 15 minutes, and get a full pint of dead-ripe beauties. Using foolproof alliums as early-season pollinators really paid off.
