Hey folks. I'm looking for a good source of spanish or spanish-style chorizo (hard, not soft like mexican chorizo..).

I picked up some at Zingerman's on Sunday and it was wonderful pan-roasted, and am somewhat addicted. But I need a closer (or more convenient) source. Anyone know anywhere in the chicago area or online that can get me some?

    Thanks.

    El Mino Spanish Chorizo

    Ed:

This question came up not too long ago on the CH Chicago board and there was a long thread generated. There I mentioned El Mino brand Spanish Chorizo, which is available in small packages at Conte di Savoia on Taylor near Bishop; they're in the cooler near the sandwich counter at the back of the store. The packages are small (3.5 ozs.; two little sausages) but they're pretty tasty. They're imported from the old country (for me at least): Elizabeth, N.J. But remember, there's a sizeable Spanish and Portuguese population in that area. I think they're good (quite vinegary, a little piquant and dried) and it's convenient to keep a couple of packages in the pantry, though there must be other and hopefully better versions available somewhere around here. Check the CH board.

    Palacios brand, from Rioja

You don't know how many times I've answered this, but I'm happy to do it again because I love the stuff.

You can get very good Palacios brand, from Rioja (in Spain) at La Unica on Devon, in both the small two packs and the long, better more natural and drier one-pack on a rope. About 6 bucks for the latter, which is about a foot long, I'd guess.

Also at Sam's, El Mercado on Southport (brands vary, El Mino from New Jersey is a decent substitute), and the deli in Cafe Iberico.

beautiful. i'd seen places online selling palacios, and it looked nice. i'll likely swing by sams to pick some up (I live in logan square and have no car usually, so places I can get to quickly and easily on public transportation are my friends.

Thanks a lot. I'm starting to get addicted to the stuff.

For what it's worth, the chorizo at zingermans was approx 4" long links, about 1" in diameter, and $8.99/lb. Two links were approx 8oz.
