I can only assume you're referring to the box graters.

Oh, I'm pretty good with the unintentional set-up. The box graters survived, the lobsters are mere memories. :D

I just picked up 3 of these last week for my son's birthday dinner and the sale started up again for this week. Claims to be wild, USA lobsters.

    Delish!

It's supposedly dropped to about $2.50 a pound wholesale from everything I read, now that it's high season and plentiful. So why are whole lobsters still $15-20 per pound at the market? ($19 a pound at Supreme.) At that price we'll just go to Davis Street Fishmarket or elsewhere and have someone serve it to us with side dishes for the same price. Has anyone found it more like $10 a pound?

I saw live lobster for $5.99/lb. a couple weeks ago at H Mart. I've been thinking hard about picking up a couple but I've been too busy to get over there to see if the price is still good.
I used to think the brain was the most important part of the body. Then I realized who was telling me that.

Apparently Sunset Foods hasn't gotten the memo on lobster. Frozen Brazilian lobster tails $19.98/lb today; frozen Australian lobster tails $49.98/lb.

The lobsters that H-Mart in Niles has had lately are the sorriest lobsters i have seen in quite a while. They droop when taken out of the tank and look very close to expiring.
I won't purchase a lobster unless it arches its back or flaps it tail vigorously when taken out of the tank.-Dick

Well, without seeing your post BR, we did go to H-Mart and buy four 1 1/2 lb. lobsters for dinner last night. Asked at the counter for four females, and they obliged (I could care less but my wife and her friend both love the roe.) Price was 6.99/lb., and we were very pleased with the quality. So from our perspective, four claws up.

Recent H Mart lobster experience since 9/25/2009.
In general the lobsters have been of good to very good quality.
The admonishment still applies to assure that when your lobster is removed from the tank that its back arches at a minimum and better if it vigorously flaps its tail.
The staff will pick out any lobster they first can grab and it may be dead or on the way to dead. I have had to stand there and refuse dead ones and they are then put aside. They freeze them and try to sell them.
They have been having an unusual amount of just molted lobsters with very soft shells and smaller meat. I would assume that their source can easily separate the just molted from the hard shell and the just molted sells cheaper? At $5.99/# its livable but at $6.99 as last weekend, you should expect a better lobster. I picked up three last Saturday and they were very good, but still a somewhat soft shell.
The lobsters at China Market are invariably hard shell and very good. I picked up at 4+# a few weeks ago that was superb. About $40, it easily fed three people for two meals.
I would rather have one large hard shell than 3-4 smaller soft shell lobsters.-Dick

I was born in Boston. I spent summers in Maine growing up.
I've eaten more lobsters than I can estimate or recall.
There has always been a need to sell the 'chicken' lobsters. They are sold to the tourists.

FWIW I was at H Mart in Niles over the weekend and the lobsters were very frisky. As my cart was full I didn't grab any but I plan to this coming weekend if they're still as rambunctious as they were Saturday.

Hi- Somebody on one of the couponing blogs that I visit posted a few hours ago that Jerry's has frozen lobster for $3.99 a pound, and she wanted to know if that was a good deal. I told her that she would be much better off spending a few extra dollars, and getting some live lobsters at hmart or Fresh Fields. Has anybody here ever purchased any seafood at Jerry's? How about frozen lobster? Is frozen lobster anywhere near as good as live lobster? Thanks, Nancy

Usually when you see Maine Lobster (Homarus americanus) for sale frozen, it's because it has died.
In Maine when I Was growing up and indeed in all of New England, no one sold frozen Maine Lobster as the innards start to decompose very quickly after one dies.
From time to time over the decades I have seen various commercial attempts to market frozen Maine Lobster of which I am sure none have been successful.
The frozen Lobster tails you usually see for sale are almost always Spiny Lobster, a species without claws.
Quality varies from good to awful. Decades ago you could find some good ones in the Midwest, not anymore.
To enjoy a quality Lobster, take the time to go to H-Mart, purchase live out of the large tanks they have, bring home and cook that day. Price right now has been holding steady at $8.99/#, size is about 1#.
Once in a while they get a shipment of1.5 to 3.5# Lobsters and that is the time to splurge.
So the question is what is Jerry selling frozen, Maine or Spiny lobster tail?
I have also seen small spiny lobster tails from who knows where an of what quality sold over the decades. None of which we purchase.-Dick

I agree that she should go to hmart instead, but people that have not had good lobster, probably don't realize that there is much better lobster to be had. Thanks, Nancy

    Hi,

If anyone entertains the idea of buying a frozen lobster, it needs to be thoroughly defrosted before cooking. There is some discussion on this lobster cooking thread. I outlined my experience with frozen lobster in comment 12.

    H-Mart, Niles.
    Canadian live Lobster, about 1.25# @ $5.98/#.
    Excellent hardshell briney tasting lobsters.
Got some small Canadian lobsters(about 1#) over Memorial Day weekend at Sendik's in Mequon Wisconsin on the way back from Road America. Absolutely tasteless and the were alive.
H-Mart does a very nice job on obtaining quality lobsters and keeping them in tanks.
Excellent Quahogs and Cherrystones along with live bagged mussels.
Prepared Thai fish soup with fresh limes leaves, Halibut, Red Langoustines(Fresh Farms), mussel, and cherrystones. Red Boat fish sauce, serrano's, bean sprouts and Thai Basil.
Lobsters were steamed of course and dipped in butter&Lemon.
My crustacean nd mollusk crave is satisfied, for now!-Dick

Was just back in Boston and the family cottage in York Beach, Maine, and I have a feeling that lobsters will be expensive this year. None of the local suspects are doing much advertising yet, although that could change--it was before Memorial Day and that's when the summer onslaught starts.

Reading upthread about the chicken or 'chix' lobsters--as we call them--when I have been up Maine for a week or so, on a rainy non-beach day I'd run down to Bedrock Lobster Pound on Rte. #1 and make a deal on a dozen or so freshly cooked & chilled chix lobsters, all small, around a pound. Maybe cost me around 25 bucks. I'd take them back to the cottage, sit out on a picnic bench in the shade with a couple cold beers & some tunes, and proceed to crack the shells & get the meat out of the claws, tails & bodies--some for lobster rolls, some for bisque, and some with shells for a spaghetti gravy. Had to do it outside in your bathing suit because stuff would be flying everywhere--very messy.

Yes, we'd get lobstered-out by the end of our stay, but within a week we'd be craving it again!

Used to stay in Wells and get lobsters at a little shack, pick out your lobsters, into a mesh sack, into steamer, take home and eat on the beach. I remember 69cents/#!
But that was in Maine and little help to Flatlanders.
The lobsters I just bought were Canadian and one had a little tag attached to the rubber claw band signifying origin.
I do not believe that Canada has a restriction on size as does Maine? But these were about 1&1/4# and I think chicken lobsters are about 3/4#.-Richard
