Garden plot rental in Chicago?

Post #1 - March 31st, 2010, 10:21 amI know a few of the suburbs have plots that residents can rent, but does anyone know of any in the city or near-west suburbs? My fiance grew up in the country and is dying to do some vegetable gardening. We are in the Ukrainian Village but would be willing to travel a little ways (he works in Oak Brook so somewhere between the two would work pretty well too). Sadly, rooftop gardening isn't an option for us, and the couple of community gardens in our area seem to mostly be focused on florals.

Post #2 - March 31st, 2010, 12:23 pmI don't know of any city-wide rental program; I'd suggest contacting your alderman to see if there's anything in your ward. Good luck!

Post #4 - March 8th, 2012, 7:50 pmI do not know any off of the top of my head, but I am sure if you put out a post on craigslist describing what you want, you may have some luck getting exactly what you are looking for. Do not be afraid to use craigslist, it is a great way to connect with people that share your same interests.

Post #5 - March 9th, 2012, 8:16 amI am out in the far western suburbs and all of our local Park Districts run a garden plot program. You may want to try your local Park District office.

Post #6 - March 9th, 2012, 7:55 pmHi- Where are you at in Chicago? I know that there are several people here who garden in a community garden on the North side of Chicago. It might be the Rogers Park area. The Resource Center also has at least one community garden on the South side. The resource center is Ken Dunn's nonprofit group that operates North Park Village recycling and other recycling centers. Ken is the "guru" of recycling in Chicago. I used to volunteer at the North Park village recycling center. Hope this helps, Nancy

Post #7 - March 12th, 2012, 6:47 amin my in box today. this is only a mile or so southwest of Ukie VillageA new community garden in the 2900 block of Madison is now being installed. The
community garden will consist of 32 8x4' raised beds. I am looking for gardeners
to help in one of two ways:
1. One half of the garden will be an allotment garden for individuals or
families to tend. A $20 annual fee will be charged for each bed to help
maintain the garden. Allotment gardeners will be required to participate one day
a month for two hours as a group to maintain the common areas of the garden.
2. The other half of the garden will be shared by the community. Community
participants and the garden manager will decide what to plant. Volunteers will
help with the daily maintenance of the beds and participate one day a month in
garden maintenance. Volunteers will be able to take part in the harvest
throughout the summer and fall.

Post #9 - April 8th, 2013, 11:20 pmI have a number of vacant lots on the west side not too far from the Village. Other than being fenced they are totally unimproved so you would need to do your own raised beds or whatever. I also have lots and lots of organic compost that we can truck to the site very cheap.
I'm willing to make multiple-year commitments so if you want to improve the lot over time that's fine.
I would like some minimal rent on the land-- but I am sure we can work something out.
Also have lots throughout the south side and south suburbs.
