I'm looking to expand my "French" recipe arsenal and am looking for a place that sells rabbit. Also, I have no experience buying it. Can you buy cuts, or do you buy whole rabbits? Thanks.

Rabbit is generally sold whole. You can buy it cut into parts but you really cannot by "parts" like you would a chicken.

Paulina sells rabbit, typically frozen, but you could order it fresh.

Caputo's on Harlem in Elmwood Park also very often has whole rabbits. They look like they were once frozen, but are sitting refrigerated.

Check out some of the live poultry stores.I believe the one on Lawrence Av. (near Kedzie?)has live rabbits. You pick 'em ,they.....do the rest. Doesn't get much fresher.

Bari Foods on Grand near Racine always used to have rabbit (frozen). I haven't noticed lately whether the sign is still up on the meat counter. But go and see and pick up a sub while you look...

I've seen fresh ones many times at Bari. Many Italian markets with a butcher counter have them fresh.

I order rabbit almost everytime I see it on a menu (appetizer, pasta, entree, whatever), yet I never make it at home. Michael Lachowicz, now of Le Francais, and John Bubala, of Thyme, both do wonderful rustic, braised rabbit dishes.
