    Limburger cheese. We've all read about it. Tonight I tried it. The lovely Donna and I were in Eurofresh Market (130 W. Northwest Hwy. in Palatine) picking up a few things. Avocados ($.79 rather than those supermarket prices), Ranier cherries, a good sized container of basil for only .99...black beans, cilantro, serranos, ham hocks, and some peaches for cobbler. Terrific selection of things Italian, Eastern European, Indian, Mexican, Middle Eastern and more. Carnitas on Saturdays and Sundays. Reasonable prices for olive oils, San Marzano canned tomatoes, and one of the most extensive selections of canned and bottled anchovies I've seen anywhere.

    So anyway, we're heading out and I mention to her that there's the limburger cheese. She says go ahead and get it- you said the exact same thing last time we were here.I tried it, I can't deal with it, not my cup of tea.

    But it was a pretty good day all in all. I had lunch at Shui Wah, then stopped at Mayflower in the Chinatown mall to pick up a chicken which I roasted on some rough cut onion and garlic. Pulled the meat when it was cook enough to handle, and mixed it with Hellman's mayo, celery, a touch of grated onion, a few drops of lemon juice. Perfect between fresh slices of sunny millet bread.

    Cooked the black beans with ham hocks, onion, tomato, carrot, serrano, cilantro, and celery. Should be good for tostadas Sunday.

    Peach cobbler. About a B-. Struesel topping-not enough flour, so not crumbly enough. Could have used a touch more sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg but nicely thickened. I used flour but will try Cathy2's tapioca trick next time. A little Haagen Daaz Macadamia Brittle would have been perfect.

    But I just couldn't handle the limburger. I really wanted to but couldn't. Sort of like a too ripe Camembert with an attitude.

    All in all, a good day.

    Hi Ronnie,

    Was your limburger in a jar or wrapped in foil? It is my understanding there is only one producer of limburger for the USA. I somehow doubt someone is eager to produce an artisinal alternative.

    I eat limburger if it is present, though I don't chase after it. I liken it also to Camembert as well as Durian and Rotten Shark; all with strong discouraging odors. My strategy to consumption is to exhale as I take a bite, allowing me to taste the essence without being overwhelmed by the odor.

    When my Dad was a kid, he once placed a lump of limburger under my Grandfather's pillow. You can imagine the fuss which occured.

    When my father was in Veterinary School at the University of Illinois (yes, before he switched to Internal Medicine), he put the "remains" of a horse castration under the pillow of a fraternity brother.

    I'm not having a hard time with the limburger. ;)

    It was foil wrapped, made by America's last producer of limburger, Chalet Cheese Cooperative in Monroe, Wisconsin.
