I don't particularly care for them, but my mate adores them. Where can I find the most delicious version of a lemon poppyseed muffin in Chicagoland? I would love to spoil him with some from time to time. Thanks!

Aren't all of the cities lemon-poppyseed muffins churned out by the same bakery? (Never eat 'em, becuase I hate getting those little seeds stuck in my teeth.) I'd give the nod to Red Hen, not from first-hand experience, but only because the other muffins I've had from there were top drawer.

The first muffin (of any kind) that I enjoyed was a lemon poppyseed muffin at Seattle's Best in the Northwestern Train Building (now closed). When they changed vendors, I searched for its equal downtown and eventually became obsessed with the not-quite-as-good version at Chadwick's in the Mercantile Exchange. I haven't had a passable lemon poppyseed muffin since the Merc was closed to foot traffic (after 9/11). And even the hope was thwarted when I snuck into the Merc last year and found Chadwick's had closed. The generic lemon poppyseed muffin to which Paul M. refers (I think) is the one found at My Favorite Muffin and Jacob Brothers. I find it tasteless.

I'm hoping someone here knows of a good one. I've been making due with banana nut muffins for almost three years....

I would suggest trying some of the many smaller independant / small-chain cafes around town

In particular, I think that Argos Tea on Armitage & Sheffield has really stellar backed goods, including, I think, lemonpoppy seed muffins. I'd highly recommend trying there - I don't know exactly where they get them, but would be worth asking - I think they may bake everything themselves which might explain the quality.

Wow, I had no idea they would be so hard to find. I guess I never paid attention because I personally don't like the taste (or the poppyseeds- I don't even like them on my hot dog buns).

Letizia's on Division used to do a damn fine job with lemon poppyseed muffins, and probably still do.

Ive read that it takes 7 years for your stomach to digest poppy seeds. Is this true?

If this were true, there would be no need for stomach by-pass surgery, as you could eat 75% of your stomach's volume in poppyseeds and thus have only 25% capacity for actual food.
    I'll look into it.
    Okay. I just did it.
I'll let you know if i lose weight.
    nope, no weight loss.
    Time for Manny's.
