FWIW, I think with Burgundy in particular it's really helpful to have an ongoing relationship with a wine merchant you like. Try a bottle, give some feedback, keep exploring new recs based on responses to previous ones. My buddy for these things is Howard Silverman, formerly of Sam's, now of Howard's on Belmont. He has very strong opinions, but he doesn't try to up-sell you, and he doesn't try to make you like what he likes.
Something you might look at as a strategy for staying in on price point: look into the beefier cru Beaujolais: Morgon, Moulin a Vent. These can really have some heft and take some age in a burgundian way without the typical Burgundy price always attached. (They're not cheap, they're just not La Tache, et. al.)
I know others have been happy at Wine Discount on Elston, and there are plenty of Todd Hess fans at Sams. I don't know him, and find the general floor staff at Sam's way too variable to be worth betting actual $ on.
"Strange how potent cheap music is."
