All who attended the dinner at Burt's Place were greeted by the sign in Burt's window that read: "Happy Halloween to All Our Pagan Friends" After a little soul-searching I have concluded that works of art such as Burt's pan pizza and expressions of generosity such as the ones that he and Sharon offered the assembled LTH group do indeed rise to the level of devotional acts, pagan or otherwise.
In any case, the spirit of LTH was present for our All Saints Day gathering. Saint Hortense Weber of the Smokey Mountain (Cathy2). nr706 of home-brew fame, and Stagger-cum-pastrami added to the festive atmosphere. But perhaps the most uplifting aspect of this event was that so may new faces were present in the crowd, among them Mhays and family, and edc. I continue to be amazed at how easily an evening gels with many present who have never previously attended an LTH event. Some, including jlawrence01, and magpie attend infrequently, but keep returning nevertheless. This is all the more interesting since a stereotype of people who connect through the internet is that we are social misfits who need the distance of the computer to relate to others. (Believe it or not, I have seen this charge leveled in anger on this very forum.) The delight present at Burt's on Wedenesday evening was unmistakable, as was the paradoxical lightness, deep char, and outstanding sausage of Burt's pan pizza.
Burt and Sharon are both saints in my book, and their history-filled restaurant a little piece of heaven, Chicago style. Many thanks to them and all who attended. As St. Muffy of Nantucket would say, it was "
just divine!"
Man : I can't understand how a poet like you can eat that stuff.
T. S. Eliot: Ah, but you're not a poet.
