    Hi,

I am glad you both got in today.

I thought I had sent it to JoelF in case he could make it, then apparently forgot.

Ronnie, it was a great to see you, too.

We plan to do another next week at the same time. I understand it is Passover, so some people may or may not be available.

It was nice not to feel so isolated, though with my family here I am luckier than most.

    Regards,

More info - The Jewel on Green Bay in Wilmette just introduced Boar's Head a month or two ago. At that time they were promoting it with streetside banners, and Boar's Head reps were in the store.
    ...
We've been fans of Boar's Head products for a long time
To those that are fans of Boar's Head meats/products, I suggest you give The Grand Food Center in Winnetka a try. I was there earlier b/c of dissatisfaction w/ WF & Jewel on Green Bay Rd. The Grand has the most impressive Boar's Head emphasis I've seen. Multiple varieties of BH bacon and covering every meat at the deli.

    Just FYI.

That's EXACTLY what the Jewel on Green Bay Road has now - many varieties of virtually every Boar's Head product, including quite a few that I had never seen before. Plus the staff is helpful and the physical distancing there is very good. I don't know what the source of your dissatisfaction is, but if you haven't been there recently, it's totally different now.

I was last at that Jewel 5-6 days ago. I've never seen an equivalent BH focus in the bacon section. It hasn't been as visible to me at the deli section, but I may not have paid enough attention.
Considering how often I go to that Jewel a half mile from my home, I'm pretty confident in The Grand being more BH abundant.

Also note that not all the Boar's Head products are in the one long staffed counter in the deli department. There's another refrigerated self-serve display just past the end of that long counter, with many more BH products.

    Slate "Meat of the People"
    1.31.12

" This makes Boar’s Head fit for popular consumption—a meat of the people—but it also makes it chewy and bland. Boar’s Head is perfect, Bernamoff says, for a “corner store where you eat it on a white spongy roll with mayonnaise and lettuce.” In other words, Boar’s Head is to true deli pastrami what F. Martinella was to Italian delis. Which is to say, it’s a totally decent approximation."

Boar's Head is fine, and I'm a fan of grocery deli meat. I just don't see any uptick in quality over, say, Dietz & Watson, or other quality grocery deli meat, aside from marketing.

Wish I knew in the tiny mom-and-pop grocery store of my yout'--Bob's Grocery on Oakton St. in Skokie--what deli meat vendor(s) they used. We're talking the 1960's decade. My two favorites--veal loaf and pickle pimento loaf--seemed to be much more vibrantly-flavored than most anything I've tasted since. And my friend Sam's mom used to routinely buy Bob's braunschweiger, to make us liverwurst sandwiches on soft white bread with Hellmann's mayo and iceberg lettuce.

Bob was German, so I envision him procuring his lunch meats from old German or Polish sausage houses on the North Side. Heck, for all I know it could've been Eckrich or Oscar Meyer--in that respect I'd hate to get my balloon burst!

Damn, Steve would've probably known the answer to this... :(

I've tried plenty of both - since Valli Produce, which is more convenient for me, carries Dietz & Watson - and all I can say is, I think Boar's Head is much much much much MUCH better. And there's way more variety of offerings with Boar's Head, at least comparing Jewel's with Valli's.

When I first made Detroit style pizza, I followed Kenji's recipe from SeriousEats. He recommended Boar's Head stick pepperoni. Meanwhile, Mariano's offered a unknown vendor stick pepperoni, which was pretty good. About as quick as I found it was about as quick they discontinued offering it. Caputo's (RIP) in Lake Forest offered the Hormel sliced disks by the pound. I went over to Garden Fresh in Mundelein who had the Boar's Head pepperoni sticks. When Boars Head is now offered at Jewel and has the stick pepperoni, I bought one. I have yet to make a Detroit style pizza, but I will soon.

What I don't especially like is Hormel's pepperoni, even though I do have a packet when I could not find a stick pepperoni.

This is overall good news for me.

Just to clarify, my dissatisfaction with WF & Jewel had nothing to do with Boar's Head, I don't buy much lunch meat, the brand seemed fine in the past. My priority was potato salad. WF is a complete joke on that front, and the better of Jewel's two options didn't look good. The Grand had I believe 4 (German, Dijon, traditional with heavy egg that I wanted, and a fourth I can't remember).

My observation was that just that the Grand had BH everything.
