It's already that time again--our annual evening of soup-serving and fellowship at the Hideout! Here is the message from Martha Bayne, Soup & Bread's amazing creator and sustainer.

"Tis the season -- to start planning for Soup & Bread. Now in our eleventh year (!) we return to the Hideout on Wednesday, January 2, for another thirteen weeks of soup to warm your hungry, chilled, bedraggled soul. And as ever we want YOU to join us on the soup line.

As ever, we’ll be in the cozy back room of the Hideout every Wednesday from 5:30 to 8. As ever, we will have bread and other treats donated from local bakers. As ever, kids are welcome if they’re with a parent or guardian. As ever it’s all pay what you can -- give one dollar or one hundred, you’re still welcome to join us and fill your bowl. And as ever, your donations will be passed on to our network of neighborhood food pantries and hunger relief organizations."

We will have 8 slots--some have already been claimed but plenty still remain. For those making soup, you are committing to bring 3-4 gallons of your concoction, already warm and ready to serve. S&B provides a crockpot already plugged in and ready to go, a ladle and lots of hungry eaters! We always have a few vegetarians and vegans--we'll set aside one slot each for those (can be 2 vegan as well). You are welcome to be as creative as you like--just note that we're in close quarters so if you plan to bring toppings, keep in mind that you'll have a fairly small work station from which to do your thing.

So just respond back to this post with what you'd like to bring--Soup, Dessert, Bread, Other, Your Appetite--and we'll get you on the list. You don't have to tell us what soup you'll be bringing right away--but we will need to know prior to the event, to make sure we don't have too much repetition and that we take care of our veg friends.

Looking forward to seeing a GREAT turnout with lots of delicious soup!

Glad to have you join us, AlekH!!

Two more spots to fill for next Wednesday—we’ve never had less than the full group of 8, so really hoping two more folks will step up. It’s for a great cause!

And, of course, we need lots of you to come out and support our cooks’ efforts (and chow down on some awesome soup and desserts!!!)

    See you there!

The hardest part of Soup and Bread is deciding what I’m going to make, I’m going with a spicy cauliflower soup that will be vegetarian. I’m not sure of all my ingredients yet because I’m making it up as I go along.

As boudreaulicious said, there are two spots open let’s fill them LTHers, this is such a worthy event.

Sorry AlekH, I don’t have an extra stock pot I can loan you.

Alek, I have another stockpot but it's only 3 gallons, meaning that you really can't fill it much more than 2 or so for travel. But if you'd like to borrow it just let me know.

It would be great if one or two people decide to join us with a soup, but if you don't have time to cook before Wednesday, hopefully you'll still be able to show up and have some soup and desserts.

To ensure that S&B had enough food, we gave up our last two spots. Two folks from the non profit that we are supporting that evening will be joining us on the soup line.

Alek (and anyone else)—you don’t need a pot if you have some other means for transporting while the soup is still warm (large jars, a cooler, etc). They provide the large slow cooker crocks to serve from. So if you have two pots or a pot and a few large jars, etc., that will work just as well.

    See everyone on Wednesday!

Alek—is it vegetarian, just not vegan? Or neither?

What a great turnout last night!
    Great soups, so delicious!
The room was packed and totally steady all night long.
Although I did bring some of my soup home,
I think it may be because I made too much, I used my canning pot, and just filled it up!
I'll have to do a measure to figure out how many gallons that was...
Great to see so many friendly faces.

Yes, thank you to Jen for organizing & to all my fellow soup makers for their delicious & unique soups — boy I really needed some warming up.

And a big thanks to everyone who showed up to support us and the great cause, especially Ronnie & Joan — loved all of the cookies/cheesecake brownies. As usual, you’d think there were 50 cookie monsters in the crowd, but I’m no dummy so I made sure to taste them early on before they all vanished!
