    Jarvis-

Curious how your meal was. Some friends and I are thinking of going to G&G for lunch later this week.

I've got my company Holiday Party at the Rosemont location this Friday night. I'll let you know how it goes.

As our events might be concurrent but at different locations, we'll have to agree to compare notes. ;-)

Reporting back on last Friday's lunch at the River North location of Gene & Georgetti, it was really good. We ended up in the side room on the main floor, not by the bar, but the room was full most of our time there. Good energy. Our server was great -- handled our questions and special requests very well. Friends wanted a steak salad, no problem, they got a steak salad (not on the menu). Gluten-free? No problem with the garbage salad. Dirty martinis were perfectly made. I had the Whitefish Georgetti, which was a nice piece of whitefish covered with a spicy tomato sauce served with shrimp and mussels. The steak salads were well received. Another friend's prime rib sandwich was hefty and beautiful. The eggplant parmigiana was declared tasty by the person who ordered it. I'm glad we went.

Our Holiday Party last Friday night at the new Rosemont G&G's was spectacular. We were seated at a big table for 10 right in the center of the main dining room and fawned over by our knowledgeable, veteran server and his crew. It didn't appear that all that much has changed decor-wise since the days when this location was The Rosewood, but it was already pretty steakhouse-y back then, so there was little need to change much.

The menus were identical to the flagship location, with the only change the addition of the Rosemont address. The food was identical, too, which was the biggest consideration for me. Everything was prepared exactly the same way as downtown. I couldn't detect anything different.

We started off with a big seafood tower for the table. Tower might not be the best descriptor, since it was served on a large flat platter rather than a multi-tiered serving structure. The seafood was great, though. The "tower" consisted of enough shrimp, oysters, smoked mussels, clams and crab claws to go around. One person at our table ordered a pasta dish (I'm not sure which one it was) and declared it excellent. Another ordered a "weekend special" of prime rib, which was a Donald Trump huge-sized hunk of beef, cooked perfectly to temperature, although looking a little raggedy in the carving department. Everyone else ordered steaks in one form or another, from a small filet to gargantuan rib eyes and T-Bones. All of the steaks came out cooked perfectly as ordered. One odd thing that was part of our waiter's spiel was that, "because this is prime beef, we do not season our steaks." That made no sense to me. What cut of beef does not benefit from a bit of S&P before cooking? I ordered mine seasoned and encouraged everyone else at the table to do the same. The results were great.

In addition to the included cottage fries (and salads), we ordered sides of mushrooms, creamed spinach and broccoli and finished the meal by sharing a couple of forgettable desserts (chocolate cake and Italian Lemon Cream Layer Cake), that tasted like they were baked in some foodservice bakery somewhere, and certainly not in house.

All in all, the Rosemont G&G's delivered as though we were in downtown Chicago. The dinner was a big hit with all who attended. I'd go back again. It's certainly both easier to get a decent table as well as to park at the suburban location.

Uphill alert for the G&G empire? I've always been a fan, but the high marks for things that are not a steak, a chop, or a liver made me smile in these new reports.

By the way - briliiant, obvious move Steve, to ask for the kitchen to season your steaks. I'd pretty much moved over to lamb chops at G&G - because they are great meat, but also because of the garlicky, salty, Greek seasoning that stands in contrast to the austere, plain sear of the steaks. Sure, you can add salt, but the crust prevents much saline penetration. Your solution will not go unheeded.

Been once to the Rosemont G & G, enjoyed the meal and thought everything the same with the exception of not having to snap the host for a table in the main room.

I always order my G & G steaks med-rare with garlic and cracked peppercorn, a technique I may very well have picked up from Steve Z.

Wife and I were going to see "Beautiful" the other night, so I wanted to pair old-school songs with an old-school dinner. Went to G&G for the first time and food was great. My first shrimp de jonghe since 1978 was delicious. Both our steaks were perfectly cooked as ordered and the house potatoes were fantastic. My pre-dinner Bombay Sapphire martini was the best I've had in years. Service was professional and spot on. People complain about the faded atmosphere, and I don't get it- the room is exactly as you would suspect. The people watching was quite fun too.

As long as this thread is getting a bump, I'll point out that Rosemont G&G has an amazing happy hour. First of all, happy hours tend to have either good food deals or good drink deals. They offer both. The food deals include $1 oysters and a $5 burger and fries (and I'm not talking slider or such, this is a meal size plate.) Drinks have changed a bit. When it first started, it was all classics, with top shelf liquors, for $6, but the last time I went, they had changed it to a group of speciality cocktails. There were still some good ones, but when it was $6 for a Tanqueray martini or $6 for a Woodford Reserve manhattan, swoon. Regardless of the changes, you will eat well and drink well for ungodly low prices.

If that was not enough, the offer the happy hour monday through saturday. So, if you're a geezer like me, you can have quite a Saturday night out by eating early.

A quick google search would tell you that it is 4-6 pm daily. It will also tell you the happy hour menu.
