Great catch, Cathy. I'll wager three mission fig beignets that you're correct.

Truthfully it wasn't mine. The person who did catch it isn't around today.

If, and I stress the "if," JCF and Janet Franz are one and the same, then I find her post irresponsible. Her own Trib colleague, Bill Daley, explicitly identified himself and his affiliation when he posted here seeking stories. That is right and it is proper. Seeking information or stories from sources--and that's what we are here, folks--without identifying yourself as a journalist is wrong. Period.

Lest I be mistaken in jumping on my high horse, I consulted the Lovely Dining Companion, a reporter for over a decade at one of the largest newspapers in the US before moving to Chicago. She concurred without hesitation.

If Franz is JCF, she owes us disclosure. I am NOT suggesting that she violated any confidences in her "whine" (at least none to my knowledge) but only that she has an explicit obligation when she posts here, on Chowhound, eGullet, or any like board expressly seeking stories, to clearly and completely identify herself. To imply by omission that she is simply a private person who is interested in "stories" without disclosing that she is, in fact, a reporter for a major daily newspaper in the market concerned, is misleading and wrong. And I'd bet that her editors would agree.

PS For what it's worth, Franz is not listed as a member of the Tribune staff on the paper's website. Assuming that the webpage is completely current and accurate, that suggests that Franz is a stringer of some sort. But does not in the least alter her responsibility or obligation.

I got a kick out of my 19 year old ravenously hungry son at Bob Chinn's last night, who when served his plate of heaping hunks of crab legs, first and almost instinctively started snapping away at the plate with his cell phone. This from a kid who doesn't know LTH or food porn even exists. By the end of the meal his friends were already jealously texting back on the images.

    Hi,

When I was driving down to the Illinois State Fair recently, I stopped at a Burger King in Pontiac. At the door, it said, "No still or video picture taking allowed on the premises."

I am still not 100% sure why this Burger King location would request this. Do they have unruly guests or were they test marketing something?

    Regards,

I take pictures all the time at restaurants. I do it discretely with my I phone. They are average places nothing upscale. Don't know if would do it at one of those but lots of people seem to take pics at Alinea as they are all over the internet. Never been asked not to, never seen a sign saying to not do it.

I have been taking some time off from taking photos of food. Grabbing pics of take-out in my car just doesn't feel the same lately. I am rethinking the whole going out to take food photos thing in general.
