I agree. I had it about a month ago and really enjoyed it. Our server mentioned it to us and I was glad he did.

Just to clarify: Khan's has off-menu specials that you have to ask after? I was just there on Sunday and did not get word from our waiter that they had haleem. Bummer.

Not sure. In my dozens of trips to Khan, this was the one and only time it ever happened. I got the feeling that haleem is a seasonal dish but I am definitely not sure of that.

It probably is, at Khan's - its not a place that usually does Haleem. Some places do (Usmaniya does a fine one every day, and Sabri probably does too). But a lot of places just do Haleem during Ramadan (and some on Fridays too.. IIRC Daata Durbar is a Friday-Haleem-spot since). If it was a while ago, that might have been when you had it, Ronnie? Or was it like this month or something? (In which case it might be a Friday-item).

Also, Khan's does have a few 'specials'.. in that, IIRC, they do a "pulao" on Fridays IIRC.. and sometimes a biryani on Saturdays (but not always), that sort of thing.

Oh, and stopped in to Khan's last week... and their kadai-ghost was quite excellent on the day.

We had our haleem on the first Tuesday in February. I'm not sure why it was offered but I'm glad it was.

The last time I ate at Khan's, I also ordered karai gosht and it was also quite excellent. In the past, I had always liked that dish better at Sabri Nehari, so I rarely ordered it at Khan's. I was dining at Khan's with some friends who wanted to order some. I warned them that I thought it was not that great, but luckily, I turned out to be very wrong. I am happy to have some corroborating testimony that Khan's version has vastly improved. Now it will become part of my regular order.

Wow! It's been a while since anyone posted on this thread. And I have to admit that I hadn't been to Khan in a few months but lunch there on Tuesday was nothing short of magnificent. Everything we ordered was right on the money. As such, it was especially great having a first-timer with us. I think he got to experience the place at its very best and had quite an excellent experience.

Here's the scorecard on what we ate:

    Chicken Boti (2)
    Broast Chicken (full)
    Seekh Kabab
    Frontier Chicken Rice
    Daal Palak
    Chana Masala
    Dal Fry
    Bhindi
    Paratha (2)
    Tilwala Naan
    Onion Naan

One bit of news (at least to me)...there were signs on the windows indicating that breakfast is now being served from 9-12 every day. The menu appears limited but still, it'll be nice to have Khan available earlier in the day than 12:30 pm.

It is indeed... but, if Zim means what I think he does by last-Friday (ie not this Friday, but the Friday before this one).. then it wasnt actually Ramadan yet then :-) It may well be possible that Khan's "early breakfast hours" are only a weekend thing.. thats when they would actually draw business, and thats when many other places are actually open for breakfast too (Tahoora, King Sweets etc all do "weekend breakfast" hours, with the halwa-puri special, which is a *huge* seller especially at spots like Tahoora. Khan's probably thinks they can be too, especially with a couple extra meat-oriented options..)

BTW, as mentioned above by GP, it *is* Ramadan-time.. which on Devon means Haleem-time. Have picked up one each the last couple of days, from "Naan on Devon" (which was rec'd to me recently as having very good food), and Hyderabad House. Both pretty solid versions, with little to separate them. Both places are making Haleem, dahi-vada, pakora's etc every day for the month of Ramadan. (So is Chopal, saw an ad for it, but havent tried their version yet).

yes, indeed I did, sorry for the confusion, I'm never really very good with the this/last denotation. I would be surprised if they started opening earlier during the week, as the street just isn't that busy.

Glad to hear that Naan on Devon had decent haleem, I've always hoped that food will live up to their name. There is something so essentially indian about rhyming name schemes, probably the most famous being "Curry in a Hurry" in NYC. I wish I'd asked. Mr. Khan was there, so I should have. I hope that someone can find out more details about the breakfast menu and report back.

It was decent haleem, not much more.. as was HH's on the day, both quite similar, both solid.

Was speaking with someone who eats far more frequently on that stretch of Devon than I do nowadays (this guy eats 4-5 meals a week around there! And he's Hyderabadi to boot). His considered opinion was that, at this current time, Hyderabad House has "only biryani" that was better than Naan on Devon... that Naan on Devon was superior in most other menu items on a head-to-head comparison (and they have essentially identical menus). He also said that Daata Durbar had deteriorated a fair bit, and doesnt match up with either at the moment. YMMV. I know Iam planning on picking up a few things from Naan a bit more often over the next couple weeks..

(FWIW, I did have a "chai" at Naan on Devon with him that day - a week or so ago - and it was very good).

Ive only seen the signs outside, which advertised Halwa-puri, Omlette-paratha etc. Will ask the next time Iam in. But, as noted earlier, Iam fairly sure they arent doing breakfast at the moment anyway, it being Ramadan (even Tahoora doesnt have their "halwa-puri" during Ramadan IIRC).

BTW, one very interesting-sounding Ramadan-special is currently being offered by Usmaniya - theyre doing an "Iftar Buffet Special". For $9.99 ($5.99 for 10-and-under), you get sherbat (drink), khajoor (date), pakora, choley (chick-peas), haleem, nehari, chicken makhni (butter chicken), aloo palak (spinach-potato), bhindi (okra), seekh kabab or chicken boti, matka gosht or karahi gosht or mutton qorma, chicken biryani or mutton biryani, salad and naan. (Plus gulab jamun or kheer for dessert). Definitely sounds worth stopping in for, sometime this month... (Iftar is at approx 8pm at the moment).

Went by there this morning around 10 - it's a Saturday and not Ramadan. There was no sign in the window anymore and they were not open until noon. I guess the breakfast idea didn't take.

Whistler with Paul McGee then Khan BBQ made for a hell of a one two punch. Khan was dead-on, six of us over ordered including the ever elusive Goat Chanp. Marinated goat chops done in Khan's lump charcoal fired tandor. Most Khan regulars of my acquaintance ask for goat chanp every time they go to Khan knowing there is little chance, tonight was our lucky night.

In the dozens of times I've been to Khan, I'd only had this once before last night. Wow! Such a great dish. It wasn't entirely tender but just chewy enough so that I could continue to extract charred, meaty, spicy flavor from it all the way through. Glad you snapped a pic Gary, or no one would have believed it.

Maybe it was the fact that I hadn't been to Khan in a few months but the entire meal was downright spectacular. The boti was a bit salty but by the time it showed up late in the meal, it almost needed to be. I initially got full, then broke through a wall and honestly, could not stop eating. This was some soul-soothing food at its best.

    Yes - its all LTH's fault :-)

(the last Chicken Boti I had at Khan's, sometime last week, was actually not as good as usual either.. a little drier than typical, not near the best Ive had there. The Kadai-ghost was pretty good on the day, the naan's good but unspectacular. A good meal, but Ive had better there. Was followed by a very good kulfi at King Sweets however, so all was well with the world).

BTW, if anyone's a fan of very flavourful, tasty, spicy Biryani (but, sadly, not as overloaded with meat - either goat or chicken - as I typically prefer biryanis to be, probably due to its economical price)... but, as I say, the best-tasting flavourful/spicy biryani in the city can currently be found at "Biryanis" (of course, where else? :-) On Devon, near California - near where the dear-departed Ambala used to be.
