This site has been "burning up" del.icio.us today and seemed like it would be of interest to people here:

GreaseFreak.com: Images of Chicago-style food, edible and not

Here's some boilerplate from the site:
GreaseFreak.com wrote:GreaseFreak is my photographic homage to Chicago-style fast food. Its purpose is my own amusement and also to use my digital camera for important work. I've only recently been using a digital camera, a Canon Powershot A520, and it excels at intimate shots of greasy edibles. You can get close to the action and shoot in very low light, both handy features when you're prone to eating whenever you get the chance. The site is essentially a roadmap of my consumption since the start of 2006. Certain pictures on the site are taken with another pocket camera, a Yashica T4, which is an outstanding product that shoots film but disappoints both at super close range and without a flash indoors.

All foods featured on GreaseFreak appear exactly how they were intended to look by the folks who prepared them. I do not touch-up the food to improve appearances. My methodology works like this: I order, get the food, shoot and eat. There are a few items, gyros sandwiches mostly, that I ordered to go and photographed at other locations. They were wrapped for travel, so their to-go appearances admittedly suffer compared to in-house orders.

It features sections on italian beef, hot dogs, turkey clubs, burgers, italian subs, chili, and gyros.

    # Hot Dogs: Don't get me started. There's just too many bad hot dog places in Chicago. If you order one "with everything," it includes sport peppers and celery salt. Never ketchup. And should the cook intentionally dunk the dog in the fat fryer to help impart a "snap," you got a real problem on your hands.

Sounds like an LTH'er (in spirit, if not in function) to me!

Cool site, but Potbelly's has a higher ranked sandwich (in taste) than Bari's?

Well, not quite. If you check out the Italian sub listings over at GreaseFreak.com, the taste ratings for Potbelly (Sandwich Works) and Bari Foods are the same -- four stars each. They only differ in their presentation and ambience ratings: 4-to-3 stars for presentation in Bari's favor, and 4-to-3 stars for ambience in Potbelly's favor. Judging by the photographic evidence on GreaseFreak, it appears that Bari's bread looks a bit more appetizing than Potbelly's toasted crust, but taste is in the tongue of the beholder. (I've only been to a few different Potbellys for a few tasty Wrecks; never been to Bari's myself.)

    Sincerely,
    Dan

I'll admit to being a closet Potbelly's fan and I eat there on occasion, but to compare Potbelly's to Bari...that's just nuts. One is the real deal and the other is a great simile of the real deal.

I just discovered greasefreak independently, and of course, it was posted here over a year ago.

Cool site, though, and he seems to keep adding to it.

I really like that site. It's remarkably accurate, IMO, and it provides a different sort of context that is valuable. It considers gradations of the mundane equally, as opposed to just the poles of sublimity and loathsomeness that usually take center stage. Looking at those photos, you see how much more similar than different the good and the bad, the winners and the losers can be in a given field of endeavor. Greasefreak is the high school yearbook of fast food in Chicago.

Yeah, Aaron, I thought I discovered it when Joe first posted it, and sent it on to some friends who are photographers, and it was not only old news to them, but they know Peter. I hate it when I think I have a cool new toy and it turns out everyone already knew about it but me...

    Keeps me grounded, though.

Wow - a lot of meat on the site. Meat overload. I couldn't pull myself away until I saw every last picture, but now I need to get some carrots from the fridge to balance things out. I'd like to see him do the same with Pizza. That would be fascinating.

My friend (and LTH member, elfin) just sent me a link to this site, which I'd not seen before.

Magical stuff -- really some of the best photographic coverage of our fair city's offerings that I've ever seen.

It looks like some front-page links have been added lately for merchandise (site-based tees) and a short side-by-side review of Jim's Original and Express Grill. Many here would seem to agree about the comparison of the fries, but the lack of love for hot peppers pains me  as they provide the spark that lights a Polish fire -- as giardiniera does for me with Italian beefs.

    Still hungry,

Must have been udated, I see Bari with four stars (taste) and Potbelly 3. Not sure if it makes a difference but the Potbelly's review is at the 2264N Lincoln (Original?) which would account for the 4 star ambiance rating.

Some nice new stuff on GF. While I disagree with some of the ratings, the vast majority are correct by me. (E.g., Rom in the Loop really does make a good Italian sub -- see the "Grub v. Grub" page.)

Greasefreak seems to have gone down - when you go to the site, there is now a GoDaddy page stating that the domain is being renewed.

Was doing some recon on Roma's Beef in Old Irving Park and sought out the Freak's judgment. Dismayed to see the site was down, I had to resort to Google cache for answers. Today I was happy to see it was up again.

(4 stars from the Freak, but more of a 2.5- or 3-star beef on my visit)
