Check out this week's Time Out Chicago for two articles written by LTH regulars, one by me on cheap eats spots with counter service and one by the inimitable David Hammond on the flavors of Maxwell St Market. I had the pleasure to receive today a request from a group of Italian artists to use the text of one of my long posts to accompany their performance art event on summer vegetable stews, to be presented later this summer in northeastern Italy. My text will be included to provide a philologic and historical approach to the subject. More on this anon.

Great! Congrats

You know, when I got that issue, I saw the Maxwell blurb on the cover and thought, "Sheesh, another TimeOut feature mined from the archives of LTH Forum." Whatever, we're here to encourage good eating, not get publicity. The more, the better. Still, I start reading the Maxwell article and I'm thinking, "Man, they didn't even try hard to make this look original, who wrote this thing?" and looked at the byline.



I got distracted at that point and didn't come back to the magazine until the next day, when my wife says, "What, is this the LTHForum issue of TimeOut? Why don't you write something for them?" And points out Seth's article which escaped my first cursory glance.

Congratulations, guys.

Anyone else in there that I missed?

By some operation of la forza del destino, I just came back from shamelessly browsing Time Out at the train station and logged on. Great pieces one and all. I picked it up just to see who this outsider, interloper, new-kid-on-the-block publication would find to tell Chicago about its own food and, well, I guess they found the best.

Meanwhile, la forza appears to be working overtime, for I found this - with Antonius's name on it in the Sun-Times:

Thanks, but please say the proverbial novena for me (figuratively speaking); I would love to go to Italy to celebrate any kind of food but, as I wait to hear more about this particular event, I must say that I'm afraid I'll likely be there in text only (:()

Thanks Dickson. Most of my board absence of late has been due to other factors, a real 9-5 job which doesn't allow for extensive non-work related writing, plus a burgeoning acting career, which doesn't leave too many hours free in the evening, and the increasing demands of wedding planning. I wish it was an endless barrage of paid writing assignments, but no such luck.

What a nice honor. I hope you are able to join them in Italy to watch the performance.

I do wonder, as you mention both vegetables and performance art, if, by chance, the Italian artists are familiar with the vegetable site Giovanna posted a few days ago.

Still More LTHForum Total Media Domination

Two, count 'em, two examples of BBQ-related media domination tomorrow (Friday 7/1), thanks to it being BBQ season:

G Wiv will be heard on, improbably, The Score, AM 670, sometime in the Mike North program between 9:15 and 9:45 am, talking BBQ with substitute host George Ofman. Supposedly you can listen to it online, but I couldn't get it to work.

And, for a change of pace, G Wiv will be seen on Fox 32, during the news between 9 and 10 pm, participating in a taste-off of Memphis BBQ (Rendezvous, Corky's and Neely's) vs. Chicago (Robinson's, Fireside Inn and Sweet Baby Ray's), along with former Bears player Chris Zorich and Jennie Howard, a Bridgeport homemaker/rib afficionado. (This is the same series in which they did the hot dog taste-off with Bruce Kraig.) There may be a repeat during the July 3rd fireworks show, as well.

You know, it would be so cool to have copies of these major media events played back during the anniversary dinner. I hope someone tapes them.

The Score show just finished, and I'll bring a copy for you to the anniversary dinner.

Gary was his usual articulate, genial self -- funny, engaging, informative...THE DOMINATOR OF ALL MEDIA.

I heard slices of Gary's interview since my car radio decided to go into continuous scan mode! I finally got it to work correctly - and with a bit of On Star assistance - I heard the last two questions posed. They got the best advice money cannot buy with a nice dash of humor. I hope I may hear the complete interview sometime.

Just my itty bitty slice of the media pie, pies and I are featured in this week's Pioneer Press feeding into McHenry County. It parallels a talk I am doing Saturday July 2nd at 1 PM at the McHenry County Historical Museum in Union, IL. The following weekend, MikeG and I will be part of a trio of judges for their annual pie contest.

There was supposed to be an article in the NW Herald as well, but who knows it may have landed on the cutting room floor.

Yep, pretty amazing day, looks like my 15-minutes are stretching to 20 or 30.

The column in the Tribune was very cool, John Kass really has a good handle on BBQ.

The Score was fun to do, but George Ofman is a friend and went easy on me. Aside from setting me up by having RevrendAndy, a mutual friend, call in and ask me a question.

All I can say, after seeing myself on the Fox television Chicago/Memphis rib taste-off, I look better on radio.
