Does anyone know if any commercial fisheries or fish farms exist within a 2 hour or so drive of Chicago?

Thanks for you help in advance.

    Hi,

The Fisherman's Inn in Elburn, IL raises trout in a pond for their use.

I'm not sure about 2 hours, but in Flanigan, IL, there's AquaRanch where the locavore superheros hang. They raise tilapia.

In Wisconsin, there are a few farms. Growing Power, the guys from Milwaukee who sell at Green City have been experimenting with perch for ages. I just think they have never taken it to the next stage. On the other hand, Rushing Waters sells at the Dane County Farmer's Market AND Whole Foods. At Madison's Sunday Northside Market, there was a farmer who raised perch, but I cannot remember his name.

Funny - here in Alaska one of the most popular bumper stickers reads "Friends Don't Let Friends Eat Farmed Fish."

I've started to look suspiciously at farmed fish (especially salmon), but I believe there are some fish (especially tilapia) that do quite well in farms and are just fine to eat.

Those bumper stickers, of course, are probably speaking to the economic hits taken by fishers from fish farmers.

Be careful of farm raised tilapia.

Kind of odd article. You could make the argument that eating more omega 6 is desirable as it helps those with tubercolosis -- and many other conditions, including PMS and diabetes -- more than omega 3 does (http://www.umm.edu/altmed/articles/omega-6-000317.htm)

Always dangerous for non-nutritionists like me to weight in on stuff like this, but everything I've read about this says that the real issue is the balance between O-3 and O-6 in the diet. Danger comes when the 2 are out of balance. The problem is that most Western diets already include lots of Omega 6, and not so much Omega 3 - so eating foods with more of it just takes you further out of balance.

The Mariano's in Harwood Heights has Rushing Waters products. I bought some smoked salmon and smoked Rainbow trout spread. Both were good but I really like the spread.
