    Hi,

Brown Sugar Bakery is across the street and just a bit east from Lem's on 75th Street at:

    Brown Sugar Bakery
    328 E. 75th St.
    phone: 773/224-6262 (RIGHT)
    Stephanie Hart, owner

They used to be much further east at:

    Brown Sugar Bakery
    720 E 75TH St
    Chicago, IL 60619-1908
    Phone: (773) 723-9040 (WRONG)

All internet indexes and google searches bring you to the shuttered location and disconnected phone number. This wasn't obvious until I needed to phone them recently. I ended up contacting Rene G to look at the image of the facade to find a phone number. While Brown Sugar Bakery's awning has no phone number, a neighboring business did. I called them to inquire about Brown Sugar's phone number. The woman very kindly walked next door and gave the phone to owner Stephanie Hart.

This is a southern style bakery with cakes available whole or by the slice such as Caramel and Red Velvet. They sell sweet potato pie whole or individual sweet potato slices.

    Regards,
    Cathy2

I went to Carolina Caramel (1511 S. State) exactly one year ago soon after they had opened. We chatted up w/the owner to learn that their cakes are actually from Brown Sugar Bakery. However, CC upcharges about 4-5x the web prices listed on Brown Sugar Bakery!

Has anyone been to Brown Sugar lately? I was hoping to stop in for a co-worker's birthday but I don't think I've ever been here. Recommendations?

I've been a number of times, though only once within the last year. Even though I don't care much about desserts, I think Brown Sugar is pretty special.

The shop and café are in the caramel-awninged storefronts; I think the kitchen is behind the hanging sign. As you're probably aware, Brown Sugar is across the street from Lem's (so don't make the mistake of visiting too early or on a Tuesday).

Brown Sugar is fairly cake-oriented, explaining why it might have escaped your attention (though they do make a few pies and cobblers).

Owner Stephanie Hart is known for her caramel, and it seems like half the items contain caramel in some form, so I'm hardly going out on a limb by recommending something with caramel. Even the shop's interior is caramel-colored.

Note the three types of caramel cupcakes (two at the left and another on a lower shelf) and a caramel ring cake in the case under the caramel cake. Yes, those are hostess (with a small h) cupcakes.

When the bakery was burglarized last winter, only caramel cakes were stolen. I think that says quite a bit right there.

For those who don't care for caramel, the Obama cake (yellow, red velvet, chocolate) might be a good choice.

    That is an endorsement!
I think I'll swing by that and maybe Abundance too. Thanks!

Just realizing that I will not only be there early but definitely on a Tuesday. Oh well...Lem's another day!

Brown Sugar Bakery, a South Side favorite, has opened a location at Navy Pier.

If there's a more satisfying slice of cake in Chicago than the caramel cake at Brown Sugar Bakery, I haven't had it. Also tried the lemon cake on my most recent visit and it was great as well, though not on par with the caramel.

On today's visit, I learned another location is opening, the plan is January, at Chicago and Cicero. While that location is likely more convenient for a lot of folks on here, it won't have Lem's across the street, so anyone looking for one of the best one-two punches in Chicago will still need to head to 75th Street.

Brown Sugar Bakery is still killing it on 75th Street. The caramel cake today was spectacular as always. I also grabbed a caramel and chocolate cupcake which was also really great, though as a cupcake it was genetically inferior to an actual piece of cake.

This place has GNR written all over it, but I can't nominate it in good conscience because there just hasn't been enough written about it here. Brown Sugar is 3-4 minutes off the Dan Ryan; it's not hard to get to. Cake lovers of LTH, if you haven't been to Brown Sugar, you owe it to yourselves and your stomachs to check it out.

Update on the the west side location I'd been told would open in January: The woman helping me had no idea what I was talking about when I asked so I'm guessing those plans are on an indefinite hiatus.

Brown Sugar Bakery has opened a third location following success at Navy Pier and the South Side. Find German chocolate, red velvet cakes, and more on the West Side. 4800 W. Chicago Avenue.
