Diamond Crystal Kosher Salt?

Post #1 - November 3rd, 2007, 9:50 pmAnyone know of a chain grocery store that still carries Diamond Crystal Kosher Salt, preferably in the 3-lb. boxes? Several years ago both my local Jewel and my local Meijer carried this. Then Jewel stopped carrying it. Then Meijer downgraded to the wimpy 1-lb round canisters. So two days ago I went to Meijer and lo, no more Diamond Crystal Kosher Salt!!
Granted, I haven't bought salt in awhile since I tend to buy quite a lot when I do, but Thanksgiving is fast approaching and I am gonna need to make a whole lotta brine...

I was in the Evanston Spice House last week and they had both Diamond and Morton Kosher salt side by side. I always knew that Diamond was more course than Morton and took up a bigger volume for the same weight, but seeing the boxes side by side illustrates the volume difference like a bar chart.Steve Z.

Yes, it's a huge difference. Morton is much denser. And I tend to prefer it in a lot of my cooking. But when making brines and cures, the Diamond Crystal dissolves faster, which is nice. Morton also contains an anti-caking agent, which Diamond Crystal does not, at least according to their respective labels. For some particular applications, that's a key difference, too.

bought it a coupla weeks ago at N&G Produce, a mostly-wholesale place across the street from JP Graziano. Have a feeling it was substantially cheaper than at The Spice House. Spice House price for the #3 box: $3.49. Seems fair to me, especially considering it's a 10-minute drive away for me.

Thanks! Just called my local GFS and they still have it for $1.99. Their dried ginger is pretty good, too.

Apparently there was recently an article saying about the salt being potentially discontinued, maybe that caused a run on things?
