Anyone know of a chain grocery store that still carries Diamond Crystal Kosher Salt, preferably in the 3-lb. boxes? Several years ago both my local Jewel and my local Meijer carried this. Then Jewel stopped carrying it. Then Meijer downgraded to the wimpy 1-lb round canisters. So two days ago I went to Meijer and lo, no more Diamond Crystal Kosher Salt!!

Granted, I haven't bought salt in awhile since I tend to buy quite a lot when I do, but Thanksgiving is fast approaching and I am gonna need to make a whole lotta brine...

I used to get it at the Spice House when I lived in town.

Yeah, I've got no suggestions for chains, either. I get it at The Spice House or Graziano's on Lake.

They still carry it; $2.99 for 3-pound box.

I was in the Evanston Spice House last week and they had both Diamond and Morton Kosher salt side by side. I always knew that Diamond was more course than Morton and took up a bigger volume for the same weight, but seeing the boxes side by side illustrates the volume difference like a bar chart.

Yes, it's a huge difference. Morton is much denser. And I tend to prefer it in a lot of my cooking. But when making brines and cures, the Diamond Crystal dissolves faster, which is nice. Morton also contains an anti-caking agent, which Diamond Crystal does not, at least according to their respective labels. For some particular applications, that's a key difference, too.

On page 94 of the November Saveur, there's a brief comparison of David's, Diamond Crystal and Morton kosher salt.

    Hammond,

Just read the article and found David's Kosher Salt intriguing. Want to split a case?

Sounds like a good idea. You're thinking of the jugs, right?

My old source for it, Paulina Meat Market, no longer carries it. And the Diamond Crystal website's product locator search turned up no stores in the Chicago area. I am literally down to my last few tablespoons. Pls help!

The Spice House definitely has it-- scored 2 boxes a couple weeks ago. I agree, Diamond is the best.

Listen to Jen -- I'm running low on Diamond, so I've been keeping my eyes peeled for it at all kinds of stores -- nothing. As far as I know, only the Spice House has it in Chicago. Would love to know of other places that carry it.

Behold the Diamond Crystal Salt Product Locator!

PS This gizmo will fake you out, though. I just bought a 3-lb box at the Spice House in Evanston about two weeks ago, but the locator wizard doesn't list them at all. BOOOO!

bought it a coupla weeks ago at N&G Produce, a mostly-wholesale place across the street from JP Graziano. Have a feeling it was substantially cheaper than at The Spice House. N&G also has well-curated conventional produce, a great selection of fresh nuts, and very good quality fresh herbs (herbs are stored in the back, so you have to ask).

Spice House price for the #3 box: $3.49. Seems fair to me, especially considering it's a 10-minute drive away for me.

Thanks! Just called my local GFS and they still have it for $1.99. Their dried ginger is pretty good, too.

Has anyone seen a box of this sale around recently? I’m hoping to use it for a dry brine and I’m having a hell of a time finding it near Park Ridge. Struck out at least 5x so far!

Apparently there was recently an article saying about the salt being potentially discontinued, maybe that caused a run on things?
