    Hi,

Has anyone seen black garlic for sale anywhere in Chicago? I want to get it as a stocking stuffer - seems perfect! The black garlic website "where to get it" function doesn't work and I also tried emailing them directly to no avail. If anyone knows where I can buy it, I would much appreciate the info.

    Thanks and Happy Holidays!

I'm fairly certain I saw some at the Whole Foods on N. Ashland. Definitely call in advance to make sure (I tend to shop at a lot of places, so I might have mixed it up in my head). I think it was towards the back of the produce section, over by the bulk bins.

Thanks, Dan! I had called 3 other Chicago Whole Foods and been told by all that they no longer carry it so I had given up on WF completely. I just called the Waveland store as I'll be closer to that one tomorrow and they do, in fact, have them. The produce guy told me there are 5 bags left. He put one aside for me but if anyone else is looking there are still a few left.

Thanks for the update! Out of curiosity, what do you plan on doing with it?

You know, because who doesn't want a sock full of fermented garlic for Christmas?

p.s. actually, I think it's a great idea. The last time I had it - at Schhwa, served with roe - I thought it was great and I should buy some and play around with it

I'll leave that to my husband - seems like just the thing he would want to experiment with. There are some interesting recipes online. I think we'll probably make something simple like a pasta that would highlight the flavor of the garlic. But again, that's up to him as it's his gift! :)

Provenance for a book signing Sunday and David, the store manager, brought out an evaluation pack of black garlic for us to try.

Subtle sweetness, dense yet yielding, hints of dried fig and prune. We ate it out of hand and the flavor really came through, though I wonder if black garlic will be overpowered if used as a component in strong flavored dish. Right now I see using black garlic in the same manner as truffle, shaved over a simple pasta, omelet or crostini, an application that allows subtleties to shine. Though I should note I only had a few small tastes and reserve my opinion of use until such time as further experimentation presents itself.

    Enjoy,

The good folks at New Chicago Kimchee are currently making their own black garlic. To my mind it is indistinguishable from the stuff touted by the high end distributors at the NRA show. They're selling large jars of prepeeled cloves for $30, but Mrs. Ham happily fixed an 8 oz. jar for me for $10.

This is great news, thanks Mike. I like the idea of black garlic aioli, will give it a go soon as I pick up black garlic from New Chicago Kimchee.

The ever genial Mrs. Ham split $10 worth into two containers for us today.

Only one large jar remains at New Chicago Kimchee, they started another batch but it will be a month from today after the current supply runs out.

We have bought black garlic at The Spice House. We go to the Geneva location but I'm sure they all have it.

Henry Brockman at the Evanston farmer's market still had some black garlic yesterday when I got there at noon. I don't think the market was super busy yesterday, because he also still had lots of tomatoes, although he was out of lettuce. Lettuce seems to be the first thing people grab because they know what to do with it. I ended up buying one head of black garlic from Henry, and I asked him what to do with it, and he said just eat it like candy. I have not tried it yet. He charged three times as much for his black garlic as he did for his regular garlic, and I think it cost me $3. He also had a deal on Japanese turnips and radishes for buy two quarts and get one for free. I love Japanese turnips, but I decided to get some Kamatsuma and Ethiopian kale instead and some tomatoes as well as the black garlic. He should have some more next Saturday.

My local Pete’s (43rd and Pulaski) has it. 8 oz for $14.99. Label only says Black Garlic, 6 pack, distributed by I Love Produce, West Grove, PA, product of China.

I pick it up from Epic Spices on Chicago Avenue. Can't recall the price but it's reasonable for a treat. I believe it's harvested and processed in Wisconsin? I could be wrong.

Black Garlic is delicious and should be deployed in far different ways than raw or even roasted garlic. The flavor will be buried by other ingredients if one were to, for example, put it in a pot of sauce or stew.

I eat it on saltines or spread on toast. It's delicious. I like having it around.

At least 70% of the garlic sold in this country is from China. I pass on it. If you can't make it to the farmer's market, Whole Foods has organic garlic for $3.95 a pound from California. I buy most of my garlic at WF when I run out of the stuff at the farmer's market. I love Nichol's Italian garlic, and Henry Brockman's garlic is also good.

Noticed black garlic at Mariano's New City in the produce section near the onions/potatoes. $5.99 for a bag containing 2 heads, says it's a product of California.

Henry Brockman is going to have black garlic again at the pre Thanksgiving farmer's market which is going to take place from 9:00am-1:00pm, at the Emanuel Lutheran Church on Sherman Avenue in Evanston right next to the Holiday Inn on 11/23. I would get there early, but the farmers are not allowed to begin setting up until 8:00am, so do not come before 9:00. Apparently a few people that live in the neighborhood have called up the police about this. He is always situated outside, although there are going to be lots of growers inside the church.

Yes, if you are going to the Evanston Thanksgiving Farmer's market to get black garlic from Henry's, I would get there early. I would say we got there around 10:30 or so last year and the supply was gone. Of course, every year can be different. They did have a bountiful supply of Okinowan sweet potatoes last year which were wonderful and dramatically increased our life expectancy.
