My potatoes are up - first 2010 spring crop that was planted outside to appear. This year is another in the Experimental Tater Project - last year, I stuck some sprouted white-skinned waxy potatoes from the kitchen in the front perennial garden, and they performed very well, despite a bit of random vandalism. Damn kids. Anyway, this year, I have two 14" containers in the back that I've planted, one with a small red waxy variety, one with an Idaho russet baker. Being that container soil is nearly always warmer than the garden, it was only about 10 days til the sprouts broke ground, considerably less time than it took in the very chilly and wet garden last year.
The biggest enemies in the container garden: 1) far less full sun, and 2) marauding squirrels, which have already dug up both pots once, though evidently to no avail. Idiots. Hopefully, i can keep the non-human foes at bay this year. Gardening in Rogers Park is not for sissies!
