I really did! Three nice ones. I sautéed them up with butter, chives, and heavy cream.

Probably so as not to let the neighbor from whom they were "borrowed" know!

Look for them next year at the same location.

I have picked them all of my life. They have a mind of their own and won't necessarily be in the same place next year. Always worth a look, but no guarantee. Nobody has ever been able to domesticate them. Of course, some magazines sell Morel growing kits... no guarantee.

Its been a great season! I'm eating some leftover morel pizza as we speak!

I found two yellow morels (Morchella esculenta) in our yard and tons of half free morels (Morchella semilibera), which unfortunately are pretty delicate, quickly consumed by critters, and not as meaty or flavorful. Cool nonetheless.

My dad found a few yellows in his yard as well, that was a first.

Deeper in the woods, I probably hauled about a pound of yellows from my usual spot, the most in about three years.

Every year I learn something new about these enigmatic shrooms– this year it was that they can flush twice in the right conditions, first smaller gray ones, then larger yellow.
I imagine the rain had a lot to do with the bumper year.

Hopefully we won't have to wait another month or so, like usual, for early summer players like oysters and chicken-of-the-woods!

One time, several years ago, I found a couple in my yard, by the compost pile, probably from the horse stable mix of manure and shavings, with the shavings at the time likely to be mostly elm which I read that morels like. Never again, though, and didn't find one till it was well past its prime.
