Hi- This Friday May 25 from 4:00pm-7:00pm, there is going to be a garden swap in the parking lot of the Evanston Unitarian Church at 1330 Ridge Avenue, which is one block North of Dempster. They always have tons of tomato plants available for free, along with other plants and cuttings. One of the organizers brings at least several hundred tomato seedlings that she starts in her home. She is not a big fan of cherry tomatoes, and so she never brings many of those if that is what you are looking for. She does grow a lot of heirloom varieties though. Besides plants and cuttings, you can also bring gardening books and magazines and tools to swap.
If you are looking for cherry tomato plants, and you live in the Evanston area, Anton's on Pitner West of Dempster and Dodge has a fair amount of cherry tomato plants, although they did not have a ton of Sun Gold left. You can also go to the Evanston farmer's market on Saturday, and Henry's Sister Teresa should still have lots of tomatoe plants left to purchase. She does charge $6 per plant though. This late in the season though she usually marks them down to B1G1F. That is what she did with her kale and broccoli plants this last Saturday. When I got to the market at 10:45 though, she had plenty of kale plants left, but she was all sold out of broccoli plants. Hope this helps, Nancy
I hope the weather is better than it was last year. Last year it started pouring about the same time the plant swap opened up, and it continued to pour for the whole three hours they were open. Hope this helps, Nancy
