Not sure what's around you in Wheaton but our local gardening centers carry bales for breaking in new ground etc. You might also call around to folks in your area that board horses and simply ask about buying a few bales that way. Or...drive down here and I'll load you up!

Okay good to know some gardening centers might carry it. I'll check with Planters Palette in Winfield and some others.

I think I saw straw at We-grow in West Chicago. It's just off of Roosevelt (rte 38) on Washington Street. Not too far past Planters Palette.

Just make sure you get straw and not hay. Hay can have lots of seeds in it.....straw, in theory, should not.

Good luck getting straw without some weeds and missed grain seeds, most likely wheat.

Very true, and in good soil, they ALL sprout. But it's not that big a deal; I mulched my fall-planted shallots and garlic with straw, and have yanked out no more than a dozen lanky sprouts. Much easier to pull than most garden weeds. Don't be afraid. 8)

Okay what else can we mulch our garden with. Not grass clippings as we do not have any the service takes them.

Any chance you can talk to your lawn service and ask them to leave the clippings?? I would think they'd be happy to do it, if you explained to them why you want them.

If you were closer, I'd be happy to sell you a couple bales of straw......... 160+ miles makes it kind of prohibitive though.

    Hey toria,

I'm on an Ag Forum and posted requst for a couple of bales of straw in the Wheaton area. I got a reply from a guy in Harvard that would part with a few bales. Is that too far to go?? If not, I'll get some contact information.
