Its been a great season! I'm eating some leftover morel pizza as we speak!
I found two yellow morels (Morchella esculenta) in our yard and tons of half free morels (Morchella semilibera), which unfortunately are pretty delicate, quickly consumed by critters, and not as meaty or flavorful. Cool nonetheless.
My dad found a few yellows in his yard as well, that was a first.
Deeper in the woods, I probably hauled about a pound of yellows from my usual spot, the most in about three years.
Every year I learn something new about these enigmatic shrooms– this year it was that they can flush twice in the right conditions, first smaller gray ones, then larger yellow.
I imagine the rain had a lot to do with the bumper year.
Hopefully we won't have to wait another month or so, like usual, for early summer players like oysters and chicken-of-the-woods!
