I've been looking for vegetable seedlings for some perennial plants in hopes I'll find new and interesting varieties. I've discovered that, at least on the Northside, there are a number of Mom-and-Pop greenhouses that are hidden right in the middle of a neighborhood. Many people know about Anton's in Evanston, but recently I found these two:

    Urhausen Greenhouse Inc‎.
    6973 N East Prairie Rd,
    Lincolnwood, IL‎ -
    (847) 675-1573

They seem to have a focus on flowers, but did indeed have vegetable seedlings - most interestingly, carrot and beet seedlings (never seen them as seedlings) They had a large variety of standard hothouse green peppers, hot peppers and tomatoes, some brassicas, some swiss chard and what looked to be a fairly large variety of herb plants.

This greenhouse, just a little way north of the UBAA, wasn't yet putting out plants for the summer when I was there in March, so I didn't get a chance to find out what kinds of things they carried, but the proprieters were very solicitous, asking several times if there was anything they could bring in for me when the season started.

Are there "hidden" greenhouses in your neighborhood?

Yup, Urhausen's was the one I ran into today by accident. It seemed very well maintained and had a steady flow of customers. I didn't have time to shop for seedlings, but will go back the next time I have a car at my disposal.

We were driving around looking for a fishing spot, and ran into one somewhere in Wilmette/Winettka. I will try to retrace my steps and find it again - they seemed to be doing bang-up business on a Thursday afternoon.

I know precisely the nursery of which you speak - it's called Hibbard Road Gardens. Nice people - they found me a very substantial vinyl-coated tomato cage last summer for Customary Dining (and Gardening) Companion's first venture into tomato-growing, which was quite successful, indeed. They're a little hard to find; the easiest way is to take Hibbard from Lake St. in Wilmette, and go north into Winnetka - I'm not 100% what the cross street is, though I think it's Winnetka Road. It's been there for several decades, and is a well-kept secret, indeed. Shhh! :D

Thanks, Peg! You saved me the trouble of re-tracing our route via Google sattelite... :D

There's another little place in Evanston that I don't really think of, but they do have vegetable plants brought in from somewhere, and it might be useful to someone to know:

    Windy City Garden Center

An important question Michelle--did you and Sparky ever find a place to fish? If so, with what results??

Sooo, you like wine and are looking for something good to read? Maybe *this* will do the trick! :)

:D Actually, the 'spouse and I made a run while Sparky was in school - no luck at the Wilmette marina, no luck at the Skokie lagoons (though the guys across from us kept pulling huge walleye out) and we were following the Chicago River but got too hungry to stop again...

Here's one I just discovered the other day in Humboldt Park:

Is Adams and Son a a greenhouse, garden center? I called them the other day and they said they had potting mix, so I assumed garden center.

I'm not sure I understand what distinction you're making here between garden center and greenhouse. Are saying that if they carry potting mix they don't have plants? In any case, some of the posts above were for "garden centers" in addition to strict "greenhouses," so under either scenario, I suppose the information is useful for someone looking for plants . . .

Guess I was thinking that many greenhouses ONLY have plants and not supplies or many supplies - a garden center seems to have a good mix of both.
