I was hoping that I would be able to get some early spring produce for my seder this year, but I am afraid that this long cold snap has ruined any chances of that. Is there any chance I am wrong? (fingers crossed)

    Hi,

The only early produce you could expect presently is either from a greenhouse or from somewhere south of here. I somehow suspect you want something more local. For seeds to germinate, the soil temperatures need to a lot warmer than they are currently.

    Thanks Cathy,
Ideally I was hoping for local produce but I know that it is too early for northern Illinois, Wisconsin, and Michigan, but do you think it is still too cold for Southern Illinois/Indiana. Really I just don't want things that were shipped cross country.

You might want to try this place just west of Randall Road in Geneva. Call them, if they don't have anything yet, there is another grower very close by who raises greenhouse greens and I am sure they will put in you contact. BTW, we have a pot of chives left out all winter and they are a nice bright green 6" tall right now, even with the snow dumped on them Sunday.

Farmer Vicki of Genesis Growers is making her first spring delivery tomorrow. She uses hoop houses.

I've been picking up spring greens (pea shoots, lettuce) for the last month or so at Farmers' Markets in Oak Park and environs.

Spring-like produce is definitely available. Have you tried the Green Grocer?

The other option would be the Green City Market at the Nature Museum on Saturday
