Hi there! I've read a number of posts asking for urban planting advice and asking where to get seedlings. Consider joining The Talking Farm. We are a volunteer effort in Evanston that seeks to reconnect locals with the land and teach people about raising organic produce. Come check out our outdoor classroom on an "as available" commitment or feel free to join us regularly.
You can find out more here: http://www.thetalkingfarm.org/ At our minifarm, we'll be displaying a number of ways to grow: vertical gardening, vermicompost gardening, square foot gardening, container gardening and more.

Additionally, many of us are starting seedling (organic, heirloom and unusual varieties) that will be available for sale in May. Check it out!

I heard that you all were breaking ground: has any further progress been made? (Correct me if I'm wrong - isn't the physical farm on the canal space near the Jewel on Howard?)

That is where the permanent farm will be. Our minifarm, the farm for this season, is in the community gardens south of McCormick at Bridge and Simpson Streets (behind the Ecology Center).

We have started preparing the site earlier in the month and built composters this week. We will probably have regular site prep each Sunday through April. If you'd like to be part of the production committee (a worker bee), please contact Kelly at [email protected] She'll get you on the email list. The only requirement is an eagerness to help; no experience needed to participate, but if you bring more to the party, let us know.
