Saeco Classico Stainless Steel, Gaggia Espresso de Luxe, Bodum, Capresso, what is the best brand ? I would like to puirchase this as a gift, spending under $299.99 and would really appreciate any comments or advice...

I don't believe you can make a good caffè in an automatic espresso machine without spending a lot more money, and even then it's not easy. On the other hand, every home in Naples has a simple moka, caffettiera, or macchinetta that makes pretty good coffee. You can find them locally in lots of places, and they look like this.

You could always get them a gift certificate for Caffè Italia, if they don't live too far from Harlem and Diversey. Or maybe just track down some coffee from Passalacqua for them. The latter would be an inspired gift.

There's another thread about espresso machines over yonder.

Might give you some good leads.

I have a Braun, was under your price range, and found that the secret to making good espresso on it is to use the pre-ground Illy in the cans (fine grind for espresso). It makes really good stuff, nothing else I could change did anything for me.

I found a Mokka Express just like shown at a store called Tuesday Morning for $12. It makes a great cup +!
