So one Saturday a month the Map Room does a beer school.

    From their site
will be our guide to great beers. Students will study several beers and learn what exactly they're tasting and the roles that all of the ingredients and the brewing processes have in forming that taste.

So has anyone been to one of these? Is it worth the 15$? I can't see how it wouldn't be, but you never know.

Never been to one, but I know that the cognoscente among Chicago’s beer geeks consider The Map Room one of their top go-to places in the city.

I'll admit to being knowledgable about beers (I even brew my own) and The Map Room is definitely among the best three bars for beer in Chicago. They have an ungodly selection of taps & bottles, plus their bar staff is extremely knowledgeable. I can't see $15 for a beer tasting class not being a good investment there.

    Without a doubt.

But, Binko, this begs an obvious question: What are the other two? (I can venture a guess, but I'm curious about your choices).

    Best,

The Map Room has on the occasions I've visited had interesting sets of beers on tap and their bottled collection is also broad and interesting. The tasting would presumably include a good mix.

Both for the beer selection and the look of the place, I like this bar a lot -- in the late afternoon. The evenings I've been there it's been packed and appallingly loud, to the point where conversation is all but impossible. And what's the point of going out to drink if you can't talk (or read)?

I'll offer my choices ... excluding brewpubs (damn, it pains me even to type the words "excluding brewpubs") I think most beer geeks would choose Quenchers at Western & Fullerton, and probably Hopleaf in Andersonville (especially for their Belgians). But, if you expand the scope to the 'burbs, I'd have to mention Yard House in Glenview, if you can focus just on the beer list and ignore the other Disney-esque aspects of the place.

Well, 95% of the time, I go to the Map Room, but I do tend to stay away from it on Friday and Saturday nights. It gets way too crowded in there and way too smoky. Mid-Saturday or Sunday afternoon is a great time to be there - not too crowded, relaxed, and sometimes they get free catered food from local restaurants (like Fat Willy's).

My other two choices would be the Hop Leaf and the Village Tap.
