With all the discussion about smaller brews having problems with distribution in Illinois, I saw it as a hopeful sign that this beer is now available here. Has anyone else tried it?

Although packaged in 30-can packs like many lawnmower beers, it's a bigger, maltier lager. It's brewed in the former Old Style brewery (okay, not really a small brewery by any means) in LaCrosse, WI, and they take full advantage of the kraeusening setup there. Reportedly, the company is also buying the old Rolling Rock brewery in Latrobe Pa, after that brand was sold to AB and brewing of the brand was moved to Newark NJ.

    Maybe another hopeful sign?

I tried this beer a while back. I am sure I bought it somewhere locally. As I recall, it tasted pretty much like the old Old Style. I figured that was the market they were going for. I had no idea it was actually made in the old G. Heileman brewery. Is it "fully kreusened"?

That's what the can says. And, to my tastes, it's not as "corny" as the old Old Style.

Nice change of place from Blatz. Seriously, this is a different level from "lawnmower beer," unless you are talking professional lawnmower, like me, my high school buddies, and the work release guys on the summer job "weed crew" ("landscapers" for a large FL property management company) circa 1987...

BUT, for that kind of beer, it is pretty darn good.

Which reminds me in a backward sort of way, I've had Goose Island's Matilda a few times over the past month and find it to be a startlingly good stab at a Belgian brew.

Yeah, you are right. I forgot about the corn. Lord knows I drank enough of the swill. I have just recently become more interested in domestic lagers again. Too bad there are so few left. I miss all the second and third tier Wisconsin brews.

City Brewing also does a lot of contract brewing. They make the majority of the Mike's Hard products we get among others. They also brew (or I guess in this case make) Monster Energy for most of the midwest.

As for LaCrosse Lager, not my favorite but I have never been a big fan of Old Style either

Where can you find Lacrosse in Chicago? I consider it a primo "garage beer" (my version of lawnmower beer) and always stock up at Woodman's in Wisconsin.

    Thanks,

I picked up a case at Binny's in Highland Park today. You might try other Binny's stores if that's not close to you.
