Next week (9/20-24) is National Wine Week ( http://www.nationalwineweek.com ). In Chicago the only participating restaurant appears to be Smith & Wollensky. In a nutshell, for an extra $10 above the cost of lunch at S&W you can have your pick of pours from about a dozen different vintners each day - with the selections changing throughout the week. In my experience the pours are generous and they aren't shy about coming back and refilling. At only $10 more than lunch - considering what good wine by the glass goes for - it's really quite a bargain. By clicking on the linkage above you can navigate to see which winemakers are featured on which days.

    Yes!

I saw this twice in big ads in the NYTimes and meant to post. I plan on going at least once if not twice (e-mail if interested). S&W is my favorite diner in town, and the wine week promotions just adds to the fun [ed., you lose some of your diner allusion when you talk about the wine, no?]

It's that time again. 9/19 - 9/23 at Smith & Wollensky. I know I'm going but my group and I have not yet settled on which date.

I have never been, though I have read VI's effusive praise of this event. Perhaps a group outing on the 23rd?

I've been, though I've missed the last couple. I would do the 23rd.

The 23rd is my birthday. Sounds like a pocketbook-friendly way to celebrate. Keep us posted. (Does one need to check the Events board to keep tabs?)

Just got off the phone and they tell me the 23rd is all booked for lunch. Lunch during wine week always books up fast and Fridays are the first to go.

FYI re: Wine Week. S&W does this twice a year, usually around the 3rd week of March and September. I always remember a little bit too late so I just went and created a calendar entry to remind me 3 weeks in advance.

Okay, I just called S&W and they are totally booked on Friday, 9/23, no openings at all from 11 to 3.

So I reserved a table for Thursday, Sept 22, at noon. I reserved for 6, not knowing how many might be interested -- I figured 6 was a good number for adding or subtracting from.

Mbarolo, Aaron, others, if you're interested in this date, why don't you respond here. If you're still interested, I'll post to the events board.

Bad week for me, only other date I had open was Monday so I'll be there at noon with a few friends. If you see me stop by and I'll buy you a glass of wine. :)
